Airports - Lamezia (SUF)

Lamezia Airport is the nearest international airport to Scalea. It is located approximately 120Km south of Scalea on the outskirts of the small town of Lamezia Terme, just off the Gulf of Sant’Eufemia.

It can be accessed from the SS18, from Scalea, or alternatively from the A3 Autostrada, also called the E45, which runs the length of Italy from the Brenner to Reggio Calabria.

The drive from the airport to Scalea takes approximately 1 hour 45min on the SS18, which is a scenic route running up along the coast from the airport through the centre of Scalea. It’s a straight road all the way and you cannot go wrong. It is not advisable to take the E45 to Mormanno and attempt to cross the Apennines on the SS504, as this is a hair-raisingly twisty mountain road not for the faint hearted. If you find yourself on the E45, you would be advised to go as far as the Falerna Exit and join the SS18 at that point. Those who prefer to use the E45 all the way should travel up to the Lagonegro Nord Exit, take the SS585 going south and join the SS18 just north of Praia a Mare. From there it is straight run south into Scalea, with absolutely stunning views of the town and coast as you come in.

Lamezia Airport is small and compact, with just one runway capable of handling international flights. But it is adequately supplied with small shops, newspaper kiosks, coffee shops, a restaurant, ATM machines (from which you can withdraw Euros using you UK credit/debit card), car hire companies, a bar, and a tourist information office which is always open and where you will find very helpful Italians able to speak at least some English.
