Coming to visit in September

Good Day,
I am coming for a visit arriving September 11 for 2 weeks with a group from Chicago, IL. We will have a couple of free days but will be based in Scalea for most of the time we are there. This will be my first visit to Italy. All of my grandparents are from Italy and came to the US around 1900 (my grandfather was born in 1880). My Italian is not the greatest but I love to meet new people and share good food. To me, the whole purpose of the journey is not to sightsee but to get to know the character of the people I am visiting; that interaction is much more interesting than any building. I would appreciate any insights anyone can offer about my visit and I am REALLY looking forward to spending time talking to the people I meet. I will be at the Hotel Santa Catarina.
