Hi, I wonder if an expat living in Scalea could give me some information, I,m planning to spend a couple of years out of the UK, Ive worked hard for a long time and need a rest!
I spent 9 months in Garda in 2005 and loved it but its seems to be very expensive now, i,ve heard that the south is much cheaper ? so i,ve been considering renting somewhere in Scalea and spending the bulk of my time there for a while, I speak basic italian quite well
Could anyone tell me if
Is there plenty to keep me occupied ( i like swimming, mountain biking, walking etc)
Hi Phil, looks like everyone's gone to the beach as you haven't received a reply yet, Scalea is great. A sleepy town really September to May and all hell breaks loose July and August ( mostly August). there's lots to do beaches, pony trekking, walks etc.Great places to visit. Scalea is really the centre of the Cedro Coast. Check out some of the websites. Accommodation should be cheap enough. Unfortunately we don't let our flat but there are lots available.
Hope you pay Scalea a visit.
Hi Phil I dont live in Scalea but have an apartment there. I think it is a very good place to go if you want to travel around the Calabria area.Sun Sea and lots of places of interest. As you have some Italian I'm sure you will have a great time there. Lots of expats who meet for dinner on a regular basis and everyone is made to feel very welcome to join in. Annette
Hi Phil, Scalea is like anywhere in the south of Italy, it’s what you make it. I always use the Marmite quote when describing it to people back in the UK, you either love it or hate it. This is the nitty gritty of Italy so don’t expect the excitement of places like Garda, Rome etc. Who in their own way cater for tourism all year round. Tourism here is July, August and a little of September. After that its back to the Calabrian way of living. However this time to me is when Scalea is at its best. Miles of beach all to yourself, quiet bars and restaurants, and easy access to all the regions towns, by road or rail. Swimming, mountain biking and obviously walking are all available. But I believe a car is always a good advantage for the later two as one can drive up into the national park, park up and admire your pass times in the beauty of the park within a 30 minutes drive. It’s all here if you look for it, even out of season and there’s always someone like ourselves on hand to help once here CC
