Default Hello and Help

Sorry to ask for help on day 1 but my mother-in-law passed away last week and it's come down to me to settle the estate,in the U.K. it's O.K. but in Scalea -that's a different matter...firstly I need general advice...I have the will copia Autentica) and deeds to the flat but think I might need an english speaking solicitor (notario?)
Can anyone give me advice/help please

John

Hi John,

Sorry about your loss.

I would recommend using the following company
Studio Legale Metta

They are based in Bari but have done alot of work for people that have brought in Scalea. He is an Italian lawyer but his English is perfect. He will certainly help you get things sorted.

Regards
Melanie

Many thanks for your speedy reply,as soon as things are sorted here we'll be looking for the direct flights to resume (Manchester-Naples) and come back down to Scalea to sort things out (apartment/bank),the place will feel empty without her.
I think Andria (my wife) had her name put on the account by Mother-Goose (as I called her) before she was flown back to U.K. for treatment/care and as my sister-in law (Pauline) speaks a little Italian I think the plan is to try a D-I-Y at the bank/notaire(sp)/ministradore(sp) and if we hit that Italian wall of red tape I think the next plan is to leave it in the hands of someone more capable....
Would rather it was all done with sooner than later

...on a rather more upbeat tone,I can't wait to have one last sit on the balcony with a final glass of vino tinto calabrase and a final cappucino and cake at the Stadia cafe..

Have to go now (filling up)
John

Post Condolences

Hi John,
In replying to your query on the "Angry Calabrese" thread, I neglected to offer my sincere condolences for your loss. It's hard enough to have to deal with your grief, without the added hassle of having to venture into the unknown of sorting out the legalities, etc., of an overseas estate.
However, just as I was confident that you would get a wise response to your question, I also know that you will be able to come back to the forum again with further queries and find the needed help. There are many others that have been through the ups and downs of the Italian system and can help you to be "wise before the event", so don't struggle if you come across a sticky problem. Obviously, a getting good solicitor is the first prerequisite, so that advice should stand you in good stead.
In the meantime, all the best to you and your family and try to take some time out for a little relaxation while you are in Calabria - it's a beautiful area and the lovely, warm weather and delightful food has a real restorative effect.
Ciao,
Frances.

Default Notario or Solicitor

Hello again

I know I was advised to try Nick Metta in Bari, but after consulting with the Italian Consulate in Manchester, registering the death, the nice lady there insisted that we go to a local Notaio.....are there any English speaking Notaio in Scalea??

Many thanks
John

I've seen references to Tony Hackett in Scalea for all sorts of assistance. I contacted him and had an eMail back today that says he returns to Scalea on the 23rd (currently out of the country). His office is 2 doors along from La Playa. Sounds like a helpful contact.

John

You can email Tony via the Scalea Property Services or Calabria Property Consultants websites which can be accessed via the main page on this site or via google. Hope this helps.

Andy

Dear All

Have finally jumped the last hurdle,or at least Nick Metta has jumped it for us,I would like to say a big "Thank You" to Tony at

Scalea Property Services

and a special Thank You to Nick at

NICK METTA - Studio Legale Metta

and all his team for their outstanding work over the past months.

We would not of been able to handle this ourselves due to the mountain of red tape involved, please see this as a recommendation for anyone who may find themselves in the same situation...

Thanks All

John

P.S. as the magic of Calabria has now passed from our lives I think it best to close our links with this site and wish you all a Bona Natalie (?)
