Hi Lesley,
The Liverpool to Naples flight gives us Scots another option although I would have a 250 mile drive from Stirling. It's a pity that some of the airlines don't appear to have heard of Edinburgh or Glasgow. A direct flight from either of these to Naples or Lamezia would make life a lot easier for us folk north of the border. I can only live in hope that this might happen some time in the future.
All the Best for 2009,
Billy.

I've read elsewhere that Ryanair (or Easyjet) have just announced flights from Edinburgh to Rome later this year. Would it be easier to travel from Rome for you?

I believe that the new Edingburgh to Rome flights with Ryanair start on 1st April this year. Although Rome means a longer journey there are some good introductory offers that might make it worth the trek. For those of you who may be interested, I haven't checked all the prices but they are currently offering Edingburgh to Rome on 1st April for £10 all in with a return on 8th April for £26 all in.

Hello Mrs T and Andy,
Thanks for the information about the Edinburgh/Rome flights. I travelled to Italy 4times last year---Twice with the Prestwick/Stansted/Lamezia route which involves an overnight stay in Stansted, and twice with the Prestwick/Rome route which involves the long drive South. The Lamezia route is becoming a wee bit less of an option with all the hidden charges imposed by Ryanair eg. 1 person checking in with 1 suitcase costs £30---1 person checking in with no case costs £10---Credit card charges are NOT per transaction but are charged per person---If you require early boarding, this costs £8 per person. So multiply these costs by 2 for the two flights required and the costs soon mount up. So until Easyjet or Ryanair do a direct flight from Scotland to Naples or Lamezia I think the Edinburgh/Rome route could be the best bet. I live much closer to Edinburgh than Prestwick---I can reach Edinburgh Airport in 20/25 minutes from home.
Thanks again for your help, Billy.

Great news!

I can't tempt you with the train from Rome to Lamezia or all the way to Scalea, picking up a hire car locally then?

Hello again,
The train journey Rome to Scalea had crossed my mind ---- I've done it a few times in the past, always booking the biglietti using the Trenitalia site. The Edinburgh flight arrives at Ciampino at 1030 and there is a Direct train leaving Termini station at 1420 thus leaving loads of time to get to Termini rail station using the Terravision bus from the airport. However, I'll probably end up hiring a car from Ciampino airport and driving to Scalea.
Billy.

Another problem when travelling with Ryanair is that they can change their schedules after you have booked, which wreaks havoc when a connecting flight is involved. I booked to travel from Dublin to Lamezia via Milan at Easter. The flight times seemed too good to be true (they were), avoiding an overnight stay, and giving us the short drive up from Lamezia.
Ryanair contacted me yesterday. Instead of leaving Dublin at 07.00 as per my booking (made in November), they have changed my departure time to 17.35, which means I would miss my connecting flight to Lamezia. I am left with no option but to travel the previous evening which will involve the additional expense of an overnight stay. When I contacted them I was told, and I quote, " Ryanair are not responsible for changes to schedules. Ryanair are not responsible when connecting flights are missed". Hopefully their attempt to take over Aer Lingus will not be successful!!!
After all that, can anybody recommend a budget - priced hotel in the vicinity of Orio al Serio Airport, Bergamo, preferably with a shuttle bus provided. I have looked on-line, but there is nothing better then a personal recommendation. Thanks, in advance,
Markel

Oh Joy!! I hope the Easyjet flihjts are a bit later in the day from Liverpool/ there's nothing worse than a late night followed by a 4 a.m. start. Mind you, the worst part of the drive to Scalea is the naples-Lago negro sector. It was better in December though.
