Default Dentists

Hello all,
Those amongst you who are residents of the Republic of Ireland know all about the almost prohibitive cost of dentistry in this country, particularly cosmetic procedures like crowns, implants, bridgework etc. Consequently, we Éireannaigh have developed a tradition of "dental tourism", i.e. we cross the border into Northern Ireland where the costs are much less.
Last week in one of our newspapers, there was a comparison of costs for dental procedures in various European countries. Figures were given for Spain, U.K., Hungary, even for Poland - bur nothing for Italy.
Perhaps some of you have some idea of the costs involved for good quality work in Italy, and might even be able to recommend a dentist in the Scalea or surrounding area - preferably English speaking. I'm sure the savings involved would pay for a Ryanair flight or two, as myself and some friends are in need of considerable "repointing".
Regards to all,
Markel

Hi Markel,
We'll be interested in an Italian dentist eventually too. Just curious what a regular crown costs you there in Ireland (without a root canal job). Our healthcare insurance is lousy about dental, so a crown here typically costs us $800 (625 euro) out-of-pocket. We're trying to get our mouths fixed before retirement, but something will inevitably occur over there. Is the healthcare in Northern Ireland always that much cheaper than Ireland? Just curious.

Doug

We have used a lovely lady dentist in Scalea but would say that the treatment was more than we would normally pay in the UK (more than double?) but some others have said that their treatment here has been less than in Southern Ireland.

Dora Licordari
Viale Europa 6
Scalea
Telephone 0985 20237
Mobile 338 7445581

She doesn't speak English but her sister (who acts as her receptionist and assistant) has a smattering.
Dora's surgery is in the building on the main road that you can see from Mercatissimo's carpark in Scalea.

So maybe trips to Budapest etc. will continue to be better value but it would be helpful to know of Dora if you have an emergency whilst you are here?
Regards, Lesley

Doug, the newspaper article I referred to quoted a starting price of €750 for a basic crown here, but a work colleague recently paid €1000 for same. It also quoted €418 as the cost of root-canal treatment, but a friend paid in excess of €600 a year ago.
There is obviously a huge variation in prices here between dentists, but the lowest price for everything always seems to be much higher than in other countries.
Thanks Lesley for the name of the lady-dentist you used. It is always helpful to have a recommendation.
