Default Winter Flights and Getting to scalea!

Hi all

I am planning to come to Scalea in November for a long weekend, Ryanair don't go to Lamezia in the winter, I'm not keen on flying to Rome as I am only going for a long weekend. Naples is an option but I can't seem to find anyone that goes there apart from Easy jet from Stanstead. I live in Bristol, has Anyone got any Ideas?

Chris

EasyJet is running very cheap and frequent flights from Bristol to Milan Malpensa in November and both Easy Jet and Volareweb are running very cheap and frequent flights from Milan Malpensa to Lamezia in November.

Check out the Skyscanner site and I suspect it will be possible to make a connection:

Default Flights v Development/Sales

Hi all,

I wondered what our community thought of this thread on another forum:

Wiil Ryan Air cut back affect off-plan buying in Calabria and expected BOOM? - Italy Magazine Forums

It is proving a little more difficult to get to Scalea. Are people seeing a slowdown for off-plan or slowing renovation/development? Is the trend solely on new build or new developments? Is the renovation world slowing? I appreciate there could be a few differing opinions (especially dependant on how you stand/work you do). Am interested in hearing other peoples thoughts. Especially those that are in touch with local estate agencies..

Cheers

Rich

Hi Richard,
We bought here way before Ryanair started to fly in to Lamezia and generally we have always had to take two flights to get here or we would need to make a long journey by car either in the UK or in Italy if we wanted to only do one flight.
The new flights from Milan could well prove to make things much simpler for us when we visit friends and family in the North of England or Scotland.
Our next trip we are returning from Edinburgh - Milan - Lamezia for instance.
The credit crunch and lack of winter flights may well slow down the hoards that seemed to be rushing over here to buy new-builds near the airport (and I can't say I think that is a bad thing.....)
Those who have already bought and have experienced the area will be happy to find ways to get here even if it is more difficult, I'm sure.
And if you consider Janet & Stuart and Doug & Di and their respective journeys, getting here from the UK is "a walk in the park".
I think the tighter lending criteria from banks is more likely to have an impact on sales than the lack of direct flights.
Just my humble opinion of course!
Best wishes, Lesley

Default Winter flights

Hi Richard

I am sure that the airline difficulties will cause some problems for British buyers but I think the Eastern Europeans are the estate agents main target now. There seemed to be quite a lot visiting properties in Scalea during July and August.

Yes I have been reading that thread. I never felt easy about buying south of Lamezia and relying on that airport. Thompsons pulled out last year and now the Ryanair cut back. We will have to see what sort of schedule they will run next summer. Naples and Rome, both easily accessible from Scalea, provide more options for transport to and from Italy.

On a lighter note I am lobbying for flights from Bristol, or Cardiff, to Scalea. Now that would be brilliant. There is far too much air traffic around London, and the other major cities, lets share it out amongst the provinces.

Ciao

John

Thumbs up Winter Flights

There is another option, that comes in 3-4 times a week, that is Stansted to Bari, according to autoroute Bari is 170 miles from Scalea, half of which is motorway, but the second half could be slow going, but at least it's another option.

Ciao

Hi,

I know people that have drove from Bari to Scalea and it takes about 3.5 -4 hours as some of the roads are slow.

If that is the case, i would suggust fly into Rome or Naples.

Regards
Melanie

Yes but those flights ONLY get in every so many days and around the 21:30 hours mark too. I wouldn't like to pick a hire car up in the dark and drive. I realise others would, but that is the downside.

I also tried flying into Bari, staying near the airport for the night then moving on to stay for 2 weeks somewhere but the downside was in July (not even the August mayhem) you just could not book a hotel room or B&B for one night only.

Cool, you must be joking!! The drive from the north is bad enough after flying to Rome direct from Liverpool. Can't imagine what it would feel like after that trip. Isn't it possible to fly to Rome or Naples directly from Stanstead, Luton or Gatwick?

Default Flights in Winter

You can fly to both Rome and Naples from Stanstead with either Easy Jet to Naples and I think Ryan Air to Rome. We got returns in December to Naples from Stanstead for £122 from 11th to 16th December

Sounds good. I imagine it will be very cold then. Where is your place. is it in Scalea or the environs. We are in an apartment in Parco Scalea 2000.

Default Flights in Winter

Hiya Lynn
It can be a mixture of weather sunny, cold, rain and even snow 3 or 4 years ago. We have a little1 bed apartment in Monticello (Scalea) a lot of stairs to climb ok going down but I take the hill coming up. It is worth it though as we have a panoramic view of the mountains, the sea and the old town. Normally once we get settled on the balcony its very difficult for usto leave. Just the type of place you need to chill out as we both live and work in London. We are going on Sunday for a week and flying into Naples and catching the train as neithermyself or Alan my hubby drive.

Cheers

Maisy do you mean you don't drive in Italy or you don't drive? I definitely don't drive in Italy!! I leave that to John. Mind you, like you we don't really need to drive in Scalea because everything is so close in town. That's what we like. Walking out in the evening for a drink and going to get a dvd and a few odds and ends. We don't have much of a view from our balcony although we can see the mountains and watch the people walking along to the shops. I love people watching. We often have a sundowner at Bar Pier where you can also watch the scaleoti "park" and create mayhem. Have you had a place in Scalea for a long time? We only finalised ours in April 2007 so we are fairly new.

Default winter flights

Hiya Lynn
I mean we actually dont own a driving license between the 2 of us. We just muddle along
and anytime we go anywhere we either get a cab or public transport and if we did have a car it would just sit there gathering dust and then maybe a supermarket run. We bought our little hideaway for 2 and a half years. Will have to pop into the Bar Pier when we are
out there.

Default Experiment

Hi All
We are trying Bristol to Rome tomorrow for the first time. We will let you know how we get on and how long it takes to drive to San Nicola.
In February we are flying Bristol to Milan (very reasonable price) but that is because we are visiting my pen friend in San Marino. There are I think connecting flights to Lamezia but we have a car hire booked.

Hi Lesley,
I was just reading thru some posts while waiting for Di to pick me up. Saw this again. I just made my reservation for November and the flight here to Rome is 19 hours total time with layover at JFK. The return is 20.5 hours w/ 3 hours layover in Atlanta. So yeah, it's a wee bit further alright. We are careful to avoid the midwest airports of the US in fall and winter as those storms can add 10 hours of delays to an already tedious trip.

I'll arrive Nov 8, take the train to Scalea and hang out around SDT until the furnishings shipment arrives. You'll have to come watch them pack all the stuff down those stairs!

Doug

Default Winter Flights

Hi everybody
If it is of any help, East Midlands Airport have Ryanair flying daily to Rome throughout the winter months. We've just been lucky enough to pick up flights for £10 return (£0 fare, £10 taxes etc) in October. We are hoping the drive down from Rome won't be too bad as East Midlands (a nice airport, easily accessible) is only 25mins away from home in Nottingham so this could prove a good alternative to Stanstead/Lamezia.
You can check them out at www.eastmidlandsairport.com
Hope this helps.
June
