Default Car Hire @ Lamezia Airport

Dear All,

Coming over to Scalea for the first time end of October.

I am planning on hiring a car from Lamezia Airport and on balance from what people have said will go for Holiday Autos.

But just one question, can anyone confirm that their desk is actually in the Airport terminal?

Thanks

Hi, All the car hire places are just outside the terminal. If you are flying by ryanair I would recommend Hertz. I have never had any problems with them and if you hire through ryanair website it is chaeper.

Regards
Michael

Thanks for that.

I have tried Hertz via Ryanair (i'm a little anti Ryanair right now as they cancelled my flights to Lamezia) but have found Holiday Autos & now E Rentals to be cheaper.

But thanks for the info anyway.

Default Car Hire at Lamezia

We hired a vehicle from Hertz the first time we went over there, the problem was, the price quoted didn't include local taxes. We had a unpleasant surprise when hertz debited our credit card £80 something two weeks later.

We have used Holiday Auto's ever since, but this has always been from Rome. All local taxes are already included in the quoted price.

Hi, in answer to your original question, Holiday Autos are merely a broker so you will not find a desk for them as they merely use any one of the car hire operators in the airport. I used them recently and it was with Europcar, it will tell you on the voucher at the time of booking , they are normally cheaper than going through the operator direct.

Default Car Rental

Hi All

Thanks Truffles. I didn't realise that Holiday Autos are just a broker. Yes you are right I have read my paperwork and the partner company is Europcar. That saves me looking for the holiday Auto desk at Lamezia.

Heather and Steve who normally is the partner when you book at Rome?

Ciao

John

Cool

Hi John

The Holiday Autos partner used from Rome was Lacauto, no problems at all, apart from finding them at the pick-up from the airport.

Ciao

Default Car hire

Hi Steve

I remember them. A little hut in the middle of no where, long wait and when I got to Scalea I had a phone call from the Visa fraud department about a dubious transaction to my account I gave them all the details of the transaction and they sorted it out.

Hey you're becoming a regular poster. Got your work sorted out for September?

Ciao

John

Following on this theme, my sat nav says it will take about 2hrs 15mins to drive from Lamezia Airport to Scalea?

From those that have done the journey before does this sound about right?

and

Is there anything worth knowing about where to refuel either at Scalea or the airport area?

and

Don't want to sound like i'm a regular speeder but are there any speed cameras to know about or regular areas the local police may do speed checks?

Thanks

Mark D

Default Car rental

Hi Mark

Lamezia to Scalea is about 2hrs. Do you have a GPS? The coast road is easy there are a few places where there can be small holdups but on the whole, out of season, it is a dawdle. I am always careful to stick to the speed limits. I have been told there are 2 or 3 speed cameras along the route but we have traveled it many times and have failed to spot them but have never been caught. You must be aware of the Kamikaze Italian drivers. Just follow the sensible natives and just ease over if someone is tailgating you for they will be sure overtake in the most unlikely places. It's better to watch them die than to be part of a multivehicle pile up.

I cannot remember where we filled up on the way to the airport. I know we used to join the motorway for a short distance but now find it easier to go through the outskirts of town before joining the coastal route. This road has several petrol stations within a few miles of the airport. Just make a mental note on the outward journey.

The car rentals are about 100 meters on the right from the exit of the terminal. Just be careful about checking the condition of the car before you sign anything. Hope you have a good trip.

Ciao

Yes, do make a note of SEVERAL petrol stations near to the airport, as last year went to the one we noted just prior to handing back the car/catching the flight, and it had been completely closed with ticker tape etc preventing entry or exit and no staff there. Spent quite a well driving up and down various roads trying to find another petrol station and remember how to get back to the airport. A bit stressful.

I would say, quite emphatically, don't take the A road. take the coast road SS18. Watch out for the signs to Lamezia. Difficult to discern!!The A3 is at least an extra 100kms and then, when you get to the Scalea-Mormanno turn off the road is horrendous. Beautiful but, after a flight and an unfamiliar drive, it is difficult to appreciate the views. My husband concurrs!
