Exclamation Earthquake in Scalea?

Dear All,

RAI have just reported that there has just been an earthquake in the San Nicola Arcella, Praia a Mare e Santa Domenica Talao region of Cosenza. They say it’s 2.1 on the Richter Scale, not huge.

Anybody there to confirm? Or did you all sleep through it?

PatMc

RAI Report:

Don't think anyone would have felt that at 2.1. 8-))

There's some great info (with maps) produced by the INGV (Instituto Nazionale Geofisica e Vulcanologia).
I have been looking in as we'd like to take a trip to Stromboli but we want it to be active as it is very dramatic when it is active, by all accounts.
In the last week there have been about 14 earthquakes recorded (Umbria & the alps included so don't let anyone tell you the South is any more prone than elsewhere) but nothing of any great note.
Anyway, it's interesting stuff (if you like that sort of thing):
INGV - Last earthquakes

Wow, what a great web-site, Lesley. Thanks for that!

Yes, I was aware that the whole of Italy is seismic - but there does appear to be increased instances of earthquakes all around the world at the moment, and not just in the usual places. We had one here in England last March which was 5.2 on the Richter Scale, the most severe in over 25 years.

Strange weather patterns, earthquakes and did any one see the two tornados out at sea from Scalea on 23rd July last? What’s happening out there?

Default Tornadoes

Hi PatMc

Yes we saw those two tornadoes. Everyone including the locals were out taking photographs. They said it was a very unusual phenomenon. I'm just glad they didn't touch down on the coast. Let them do their damage out at sea.

By the way I didn't manage to get any shots of it. Does anyone have some photos?

Ciao

John

There are some tornado photos in the photo gallery.
They were not this year but earlier (so not that much of an unusual occurrence?)One by RayandJax

Default Put this in the for what it's worth department

Hi all,

As one who grew up with tornadoes, calling them that over water didn't seem right so I looked this up:

Waterspout: A rapidly rotating column of air extending from a cumulonimbus cloud with a circulation that reaches the surface of the water, (ie a tornado over water).

Default Tornadoes

Thanks Di

Didn't realise there was a difference. You learn a little every day. So a tornado turns into a waterspout every time it passes over a body of water and visa versa.

Hi John,
I forgot to post this last week. I heard on the radio that a water spout somewhere in California picked up a bunch of sardine sized fish and scattered them on streets and lawns when it went onshore and dissipated its strength. Apparently it was a school of fish feeding near the surface. Never saw a story on TV and just the one radio station in Los Angeles mentioned it.
