I thought it might be useful to have a WHY? thread about things Italian that other nationalities don't understand or are perplexed by.

I'll start:

Why do all the properties have those funny beds? You know the ones, with that are just a frame, then two 'camp' type beds plonked inside the frame, separately. It perplexes me.

Oops, sorry for the mistakes - hopefully you understand the gist of my question. I did try to edit my mistakes but I failed at my attempt.

I think the reason might be that if they are properties that are being let to holidaymakers,
if one part of the mattress is destroyed then instead of having to replace a double mattress, they only need to replace one single one. Also, good proper double beds can be quite expensive over there so if they need to be replaced on a regular basis, they probably think it is more economical to go for the cheaper ones. Thats my theory anyway.

We have just come back from where the Gelataria and Restraunt are on the piazza at the foot of Centro Storico and we wondered why we could not order a coffee whilst there is a musician playing? We did have a large cocktail and ice cream but could not get a cofffee??????? Is it because coffee is cheap and doesn't pay for the entertainment?

Easy! Not all beds are like that. You're generalizing from what you see in the holiday resorts in this area. By and large, beds have a wooden (or wrought iron) frame with a double (matrimoniale) framed net, fastened in various ways to the bed-frame.

What you see in Scalea may be a quick-fix to increase the flexibility of sleeping berths in a flat.

Thank you Gian! I have to say those holiday beds are all over Southern Italy, including Sicily.

I will make it my aim to sleep in a proper Italian bed. ER, what am I saying here?!!! With my husband of course.
