Directions From Naples Airport

When travelling to Scalea from Ciampino Airport in Rome we followed directions which had been posted on this forum by Billy, and others.The directions were idiot-proof, so were exactly what we needed.
This trip we are flying into Naples and wonder if there are any kind souls out there who have driven Naples to Scalea, and who wouldn't mind posting equally clear and detailed directions here. I have searched, but can't find anything on any of the older threads.

Hi ,The best I can say is that it is fairly handy if you take your time and watch the signs.watch for reggio Calabria.After you leave the airport you need to cross over the top of themotorway and go back in the direction you came from ,only on the other side .Look for the A3 and the E45 Sud ,which means south.Sounds complicated but its not,,good luck...Cool.

Going to Scalea is fairly easy and if you follow sins for Salerno and Reggio Calabria then you cant really go wrong.
Whatever you do though on the return journey follow the signs for Roma Bari, do not follow Salerno, the Salerno route does not have the airport signposted and before you know it you are in Naples centre, very distressing (especially when my wife was seven months pregnant and we were on the verge of missing our flight) and finding the airport is a nightmare...

If you do take a wrong turn then you need to get on the Tangenzialle (spelt wrong I think), this will lead you to the airport eventually....

From Naples, take the motorway A3 Salerno-Reggio Calabria, turn off the motorway at Lagonegro nord, and then drive to Scalea.
It's very easy

Hi, Just while we are on the subject of return journeys to naples from Scalea,when i get nearly into Naples ,there is a right turn where the motorway goes on up to Rome .Should I take that road and turn off for the airport later or stay going all around the coast to the airport.I know the way I go back is different from the road I come out .When i get to the point where the road turns off right for Rome ,,This is where I would join the motor- way on the way down.Hope you can undrestand this.It seems I do a lot more milage from this point on the way home than I do on the way down..Cool

After making this jourey many times, I can honestly say that by far the best way to go is the following-
Heading North on the Autostrada E3/A45,before you get to Salerno there is a right turning that is signposted for Bari / Roma E841, if you take that turning and then follow this route ( E841 then the A30, then the A16), you will then come up to signs for Naples once on the A16 get ton the A1 to Naples and follow the signs for the Tangenziale (A56) once on this you will see the signs for the airport, there are two turnoffs for the airport, the first one will take you to the airport itself and the second one is the best one for the rental car parking.
If you take the second turn off then you will come off the Tangenziale and follow the road to the end and turn right, the turning fo rthe rental car parking is then about 100 yds on the right but is tucked away so be careful you dont miss it.

Alternatively if anyone needs directions then go onto Google map an choose where you need directions from and to, this will give you clear and concise dirctions to choose from and if you go on to the satellite image then it is clear enough to even pick out the car park.

Hi Paul,

We made the same mistake as yourselves once and found ourselves in the centre of Naples.
Fortunately we could see that we were coming near the train station so this is what we did.
We knew that the S3 Airport bus left from the stop just beside the McDonalds restaurant on the corner near the station. We pulled in there and waited for the S3 bus to arrive and then we drove behind it to the Airport. It was a desperate measure but like yourselves we were pressed for time to check in for the flight. So if any of you reading this find yourselves in the same position, there is hope!!

Good advise from everyone, you will be Ok.

I always try google earth get directions from airport to Scalea and then press the arrow button underneath the directions . It takes you on a virtual drive along the route. You can see buildings and the manoeuvre from the car hire park to get onto the motorway is quite easy to follow. So is the reverse procedure.

The first time we drove from Naples to Scalea we used the motorway west (coastal side) of Vesuvius. It takes through some heavily populated suburbs of Naples and densely populated areas along the coast through San Georgio, Ercolano and Torre del Grecco. It does join the other motorway at Salerno but is definitely the route to avoid.
