Default bbc world service reception

I've bought an apartment at Scalea and intend to stay here most of 2006, trying to paint.
Does anyone listen to BBC World Service? What radio I should buy?
I'd also appreciate info on tv dishes with BBC and French television.

And lastly, does anyone paly tennis?

Dmitry, london and Scalea /localita Petrosa/

Hi Dimitry!

I'm not sure about Italy, but I know that Roberts Radios always have quite good reception in the uk (in fact, they are the only radios that prisoners are allowed to use, don't ask me how I know!!).

I'm wondering if the new D.A.B radios would work best as they work on a digital frequency?

Tony will probably know best.

Regards, Jacqui.

Hi Jacqiu,
Thank you for your advice. It looks like it's possible to install a dish with BBC World, BBC Prime and the French TV5. I hope to do it after the Easter when I finish with the builders and plumbers (I don't think it's possible though) I wish I could ban them from my home forever either at Scala or in London.
I've uploaded some pictures to my galllery but am not sure whether I've succeeded.

Regards, Dmitry

Is BBC World service only a news channel or a mixture.

Im happy either way as I will require news on a daily basis given there are no English newspapers.

if my Italian improves who knows i will be reading italian newspapers

I listen to the BBC World Service every day here in London. I don't watch TV, but I never miss the BBC World Service. I listened to it as a child growing up in Dublin in the fifties and it opened the world to me. I listened to it for all the years I lived in the States and it was a life-line to home and now I'm home I am still listening!

It runs an excellent regular on the hour every hour very comprehensive international world news service, though you can sometimes miss out on more local home news items which they do not consider as having international significance.

They also run excellent business and financial news reports, classical, pop and ethnic music, book readings, arts programmes, report on religion, plays at the week-end, From Our Own Correspondent editorial reports from places in the news and feature interviews with important international figures.

Why don't you check out their web-site for full programme information and listings. You can even click on their archive and hear old programmes. (BBC News in Google will get it, and then click Radio) or just tune in!

Hope this helps.

If you don't have the internet and have a shortwve radio you can try the following frequencies:

9.410 MHz
6.195 MHz
15.485 MHz
17.640 MHz

I could only get a reception on the first one, next time I am on the beach I might take my little radio with me.

Ciao, David

Does anyone know if there's any point in taking (or buying there) a digital radio to Scalea?

Saluti a tutti! Or as Gerry Scotti would say on the Italian version of Millionaire - Che Dio vi benedica! - which reminds me - has anyone watched that? (no jokes about Italian TV please - too easy!) - anyway, they take about half an hour pondering over each question and the questions !!!! unbelievable! Anyway, because it goes so slowly might be a good way of brushing up on Italian - he's very easy to understand. (It's on Canale 5 at 7 in Italy)

Have just re-read the last bit I put on here and I think it might get read wrongly - so apologies to all contestants of 'Millionario' if it does. If anyone gets to watch it - and I think it would be a good one to watch for learning Italian because they speak quite slowly and it's usually obvious what they're talking about - is that although they've flogged the same format it 's become something quite different - they have ages to think about the questions and go over and over the possibilities. Most of the questions seem unbelievable because they're usually really obscure - stuff on Greek mythology or way out grammar or stuff on saints - so it ends up seeming more of a 'lottery' choice when they decide. Maybe the format changes a bit in each country. Anyway, whatever, it makes it easy to keep up with what they're on about - apart from actually knowing the answers which I think most of us would be clueless about!

DAB will not get the BBC in Calabria even if it was available in Calabria. However the best bet for the BBC is via satellite on the free channels on Hotbird or Astra. I got a free to air kit at Centro Gross last year for 99 euros including dish.

Alternatively short wave radio as David suggests is ok , most world band radios now have pretty good reception.

Finally if you have a pc you can either install a pc satellite card to receive via sat or if you have a broadband connection via the net.

Anybody that requires to get the BBC / ITV channels in Calabria, will need a 2.4m dish and I would be very happy to help as I intend to install one sometime soon.
