Ah, what intelligent questions and ones for which the wonderful TrenItalia Web-site (
www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html) gives all the answers!
You are actually better off using the Italian version as it provides more information:
Enter the name of the from/to station in the boxes provided and the date required (the correct name of Scalea station is Scalea-S. Domenica Talao), click Send and you will get a number of pages giving a complete list of all trains available on that date. The information given includes the depart/arrival time, the duration of the journey, details of any changes which need to be made, the train number (make a note of it for later) and the type of train. Click the Shopping Trolley at the end to get the price and the Details link and train number to be shown the complete journey with the arrival/depart times at all the stations in-between.
If your train has already left its originating station, e.g. Milano, you can find out if it’s late or on time by clicking Home, ViaggiaTreno along the top, Go to ViaggiaTreno at the bottom, Entra and, when the page loads, entering the train number (which you already noted, didn’t you!!) in the Numero Treno box on the right hand side. A pop-up box will show you exactly where the train is now, whether it’s late (in ritardo), early (in anticipo) or on time (in orario) -- it looks a bit like the Piccadilly Line Tube Map on the London Underground, but in real time!!
Finally, the Trenitalia Web-site only provides train and timetable details for up to two months in advance. If you search for three or more months in advance you will be given a ‘No Solution’ response. This doesn’t mean there are no trains, just that the timetable has not been uploaded yet.
Now if only British Rail had something like that!!
PatMc-the-anorak! (Strong sweet tea with milk for me, please!)
