Default Car rental

Hi Cool, When I was over in Scalea I looked in to buying a car in an Italian friends name.I would have got a car for about 3000 or 4000 Euro + tax & Insurance. I worked out the return train fare from Naples or Rome airport to Scalea about 3 times a year and taking in to consideration the maintence on a fairly old car it didnt seem to be a good option for me in the short term. As I have my daughters wedding in July of this year I didnt feel I could afford to spend that sort of money on a car at the moment .How would you think a Car pool would work out. I wonder If a few of us bought a car between us would that be an options. Let know how you feel about it .Annette

Hi,
We have a oldish car, which we leave in Scalea, and drive back for its MOT. It has been a real asset to us ,and to my daughters who also use it.
The only downside is the 3 days travelling, but this can be quite interesting in its self. This will be our second year of doing this , I reckon it has more than paid for its self in year one.

Default car hire

Hi all

We have just returned from Scalea this week and this is a question that I have been asking for a long time now, apparently two weeks ago the law in Italy has changed and you can now buy a car and leave it there even if you are not an Italian citizen, the only down side is that Italian insurance is so expensive that it could almost come to the same price as hiriing a car for whilst you are in Italy, I am looking into other options at the moment so wil kepp you posted but most English insurers state that on a fuly com policy yu are insured third party on any other car , I am not sure if this would include an Itlian registered vehicle but in this day and age and the Eu regs then it may just be the case, as most Italians are only insured third party only then this may be a cost effective method of buying a car and then running it in Itay ( although if it gets stolen you would not be covered)

We had a long chat to Drek and Monica who have just bought a very nice Alfa on Italian plates and they told us that the buying process was relatively simple.

Hi Paul,
Glad to hear the law as at last changed for buying a car. Can you tell me were you got the information. Buying a car would be a lot better than hiring all the time, except as you say the insurance could be high. But I think it is worth looking into.

Michael.

Default Italsure

If anyone is looking for insurance for an Italian registered car (or an English registered one to use in Italy all year) we have found Italsure to be very competitive.

Fully comprehensive cover and all the paperwork in English.

Default Car Hire

Hi all,

I have checked with my insurance company and all was going great until they asked if the car was registered in English or Italian plates, if the car was in English plates then there would be no problem and would be insured 3rd party only even if registered in someone elses name, however the insurance is not valid for cars not english registered.

If anyone has any other suggestions then please post them.

Paul Campbell.

As I cannot locate any threads previously used to enquire about car hire, I hope none of you will mind too much if I hijack this one temporarily.

While looking at car rental sites today, I found one called CarHire3000. Has anyone used them? Their rates for June/July seem very competitive e.g. they don't charge for the first additional driver, which could mean a considerable saving - every litttle helps, after all. In fact, their rates would seem to be just slightly more than half the amount quoted by Hertz.

Just wondering what the catch is.

Thanks,
Markel
