Internet Access

Hello Everybody,
I have just returned home after a very enjoyable 10 days in Scalea.My son was with us on holiday accompanied by his laptop.He also had with him his 3G phone on the 3 network. He was able to use the phone as a modem and get Internet Access for £2.50 per week. I just want to let any interested people know that there is a strong 3G signal in the Bussola area of Scalea. This may probably mean that the whole Petrosa area will receive the same signal.

this is very interesting as i have a 3 phone myself.

can you explain this further..... how on earth do you use a phone as a modem.....!??

and even when you do that how can you connect it to your laptop?

your son is bit of a wizard i guess.

Hello Tom,
My son is a graduate in Computer Science but I barely know how to switch on a computer. I'll see him tomorrow and get more information about the internet access and I will get back to you. It may depend on which part of Scalea you are in. We are in the Petrosa area which is the high part behind the Centro Storico. We found it useful to be able to go on the Internet while in Scalea without a proper phone connection and it also allowed Gordon[my son] to do a wee bit of his Uni work while he was there.

I have been using Telecom Italia for the past two years and just today I decided to end this contract which is both expensive and not always reliable in favour of a TRE Italia setup. The set up is easy. Either get a 9Euro sim card (what I have now) and you just pay for the month you are using it in by prepaying. No contract is required and can then be mothballed till the next time you visit.

The sim card allows voice , sms and data. The data bit is limited to 50Mb per day which if not a heavy user should be very adequate for most email and some webbrowsing.

The shop installs a simple program on your pc and off you go. You either plug in your phone via the cable or simply bluetooth to the phone.

Hello Again Tom,
The phone my son used was a SKYPEPHONE which cost him £50.He says he could probably help you with this if he knew the name and model of your phone.You would connect to the computer with USB or BLUETOOTH, whichever one your phone supports.He says you might need to download a PC Driver from your phone manufacturer's website in order to use it as a modem. Hope this helps you a wee bit.
