Default Lamezia-London flights to double from next April

Sacal (management company of Lamezia airport) announces that Lamezia - Northern Europe flights will double.
Within the last few months a hundred houses by the sea in Badolato have been purchased by Danish buyers whilst 200 new-builds have been reserved, largely by British buyers, at Marina Di Isca.
According to Sacal, this is "thanks to connections with the low cost routes northern Europe that makes it more and more convenient for foreigners to come to Calabria."

From next April 1, flights to London will be doubled, announces Sacal.

"What seemed a chance '- says the president Eugenio Ripepe - is becoming a constant. Having a low-cost flights, direct flights, reliable, comfortable and safe, such as that between London Stansted and Lamezia with Ryanair, and how those that through the low cost 'hub' of Pisa and Orio al Serio actually connect to Lamezia large network of European destinations, is extraordinary and hitherto was an unthinkable way to get to and live in Calabria. In addition the actual appeal of the landscape, and naturally mild climate of the region, has not previously been fully valued. Plus, the exchange rate is strongly now in favour of sterling against the euro crown. This is an explaination of the phenomenon'.

Hi Lesley,
Great news that the London/Lamezia flights are to double in frequency. This might mean that for people like myself the journey could be done in one day instead of involving an overnight stay at Stansted. It will all depend on the timetable I suppose. Keep the good news coming Lesley. Who knows, perhaps us Scots will eventually get a direct flight from Prestwick to Lamezia courtesy of Ryanair.
Best wishes to you and Brian,
Billy.

Dear Lesely,

That really is good news!

I noticed that this year RyanAir continued to run four flights per week to Lamezia throughout the winter months, as opposed to the two flights per week it reduced it to last winter.

Also, on the basis of your lovely informative posts there seems to be many more events organised in and around Scalea this winter - Arts & Crafts Exhibitions, Jazz Concerts, I Battenti (well, yes..), Passion Plays, Easter Concerts etc., etc. Things are really looking up. I just hope this lovely little corner of Italy never becomes another Costa, which would ruin it’s unspoilt appeal.

Hi Pat,
I would say there is the just same amount of stuff going on as in previous years but now that I'm here full time I am trying to get some info and post it here if I find out about anything.
Frustratingly, I often find out after the event or only very shortly before things happen - but it will at least give an indication for subsequent years hopefully.

If you ever see a woman parked beside a bus-shelter or wall taking notes from the attached posters - give her a wave - it'll be me!

Hi Lesley Thats great news about the Stansted - Lamezia flights been doubled from April. Is that from next month or April 2009.Hopefully the extra flights will be later in the day and it will elimate the need to stay overnight in Stansted. It would mean a long weekend in Scalea would be an option. How is your Italian lessons coming along.Happy Easter to youself and Brian and all on the Forum.

Hi Annette,
I interpreted it to mean April 2009 (but could be wrong!).
It seemed to be saying that the airport management co were allocating double the amount of slots to the Lamezia-London route.

Italian lessons are fab - we are on Easter holiday just now though - back on Wednesday.
Wouldn't have time for school anyway just now - too many folk here that we are trying to see/eat with etc.
Great fun!
Lesley
