hi there Tom,
I am a recently new member as well, but I have some information for you.
We lived in Italy for 20 years and speak fluent Italian.
We have been several times to beautiful Scalea and have bought an appartment there. Its a renovated building and is as new inside and out; the electrics, water pipes, the lot.
We used an agency - we know them very well and they are good and speak english. They will sort out everything for you on purchase - the electric company etc. All part of their fee ( about 3%)
Have a look at their website -send them an e-mail with your requirements.
Getting to Scalea is not a problem. Cheap flights from Stansted with Ryanair - only problem no flights from Manchester - no direct train services. Going by car you need 5 hours. Taxi will cost about £300.
We are going over in April and using Jet2.com from Manchester to Rome Fiumicino and then getting a connection flight with Air-One to Lamezia Terme.
Book the flights on-line with Jet2.com and went through
www.e-dreams for the flight Rome/Lamezia. Jet2.com flights are cheap. Air-One costs about £150 return. They show costs in euro. Used both before and no problems. You can book online with Alitalia Manchester to Lamezia Terme; Manchester-Paris Paris-Rome Rome -Lamezia Terme. Luggage goes direct to Lamezia.
Plenty of time between flights. Total journey time is between 8 hours and 12 hours depending on which times you want to travel. This is not a good option and is expensive.
About "red tape" in Italy and here: documents you need we are up to speed
on all that.
If you want anything we are at Lytham St Annes - not far from Manchester.
My brother is into the admin and documents so if you need anything drop us a line at
