Jee ... whizz, Lesley: sounds just like Durban!
We seems to be settling nicely into dry-season here: 14 to 25 daily excursions on average, no rain or just a couple of short nightly showers. So, we're leaving for similar weather - albeit wetter and busy warming up - in Scalea.
Glad to hear from Doug that both, him and Di, can now throw the woollies and crack open the Speedo power-packs.

See you in Scalea in a few days. Getting ready and counting the hours.

ciao

Hehe! This is the other computer!
Still lots to do before we can start packing. Elaine's still looking for suitcases.

Hi there,

my daughter and her husband are in Scalea at the moment too and agrees that the weather is just gorgeous . They have just pulled out the awnings as they "just needed a little bit of shade for a while" We are so jealous as we will not be back again 'till September. Enjoy!

We are having a thunderstorm (mi piacere molto i temporali) with rain pouring straight down and nice thunder. Since it's my favorite kind of weather after sunny days, had to report it. It's also completely wierd weather here (high desert Oregon) for late June.

Ciao a tutti,
What's the weather doing in Italy and UK? It is verrrry unusual here this year. Following a very unusual winter with record snow. We have started wildfires all over and some of them are seeing crown fires in the trees when there is snow still underneath on the ground.! It's finally cooling down to normal, but was up to 39.5 C the other day. It is still only July eh? The humidity is also remarkably higher here this year.

Nice to know what's up in your environment. Have a great summer, Doug & Di

Hi Annette,
We'll not arrive in Scalea until Friday, so that won't work for us, but there is a big festival Saturday and maybe we can all rendezvous somewhere to participate. Maybe a pre-festival rendezvous at Bar Pier? Hear that Janet and Lesley, you famous social organizers??!!? I'm bringing a big camera to document whatever big happens that evening.

Weather, oh yeah, it has cooled here a bit and wildfires are not threatening unless you live in fancy homes in California. I am bringing a very non-high tech thermometer to hang on our new casa in Santa Domenica.

Default Meeting up

Hi Annette, mind if we come along on Saturday 12th for a drink? We leave on 15th so it will probably be our last opportunity to meet up.

Howdy,
Haven't heard much about the weather of late other than London being hot, then wet. Has the UK dried-out a little since early summer? How's the Scalea area for those that are still lingering?

It's been pleasant here in the NW of the USA for a couple weeks, but believe it or not, there are frost warnings for tonight in our area and a chance of light snow in the hills of eastern Oregon. I need to read up on whether we are faced with an El Nino or La Nina winter....... This cold snap is at least a month early. We are moving out of this property soon and maybe the value of our snowblower will go up as we try to sell stuff off!!

Ciao, Doug

Hi Doug,

Weather here was very wet for all of June and most of July and we had some foods in parts of England in early August. For the second half of August it’s been overcast with a mixture of light rain and a few sunny days - all in all a terrible summer. Yes, most places have dried out a little now. But the grey skies are depressing - it’s like living under an elephant!

Interested to hear you say you have had frost warnings with a chance of snow (in August!). The holly trees here in England (and in my garden) are covered with red berries already. They say that’s always a sign of a very cold winter. So, there may be worse to come.

July in Scalea was lovely, though I understand June was unseasonable wet. From the Web Cam in Diamante the present conditions seem to be a mixture of lovely sunny days and overcast days, though warm as people are lightly dressed. The new flags which have gone up along the promenade enable you to tell which way the wind is blowing and there seem to be fairly stiff breezes coming in from the sea . Though if it’s warm, a stiff breeze can be refreshing.

Hello,
Yes, we enjoyed our brief July visit....our first time there in the summer. We found Rome pretty uncomfortable with the humidity, but "down home" it was nice and there are great breezes up the slope into Santa Domenica. That was good to know so we won't be tempted to install AC!

Tomorrow's news will tell how bad the latest hurricane is for New Orleans. That poor city had not fully recovered from Katrina.

Auguri,
Doug

Red face

Hi Doug,

I like it !!!............"Down home". Settled in very well by the sounds of it.
1st of Autumn today and I don't think anyone here in Ireland minds one little bit. Normally we hate the thoughts of Autumn and Winter approaching but after a second dismal summer in a row nobody really cares. We've had floods worse than we would get in any winter and just those permanently grey clouds hanging over us..... Very depressing !!
Could do with a nice week under Italian skies but will have to wait til October unfortunately.
Hearing lots about Gustav approaching New Orleans any minute. Those poor people facing that all over again only 3 years on. Really doesn't seem fair for them to have to go through that again. Can only pray that it may not be as bad as expected.

Anyway take care for now
Niamh

What in the world is going wrong with our weather?

Last night there were severe storms and flooding across South Wales and South-West England leaving one person dead and houses and business in some areas again flooded, having been already been flooded last year. The weather forecast is for more rain and storms over the next 24 hours extending northwards to the Midlands and Scotland. Here in London it poured for most of yesterday and this morning we again have heavy overcast rain-laden clouds above us, though it is not actually raining at this moment.

According to the Met Office we had 139.8mm (5.5in) of rain in August alone and no more than 105.5 hours of sunshine (that‘s an average of 3.4 hours a day folks, think about it!). The former is the fifth wettest on record and the latter gave us the dullest August ever since records began in 1929.

And all this in Summer! What will winter be like?

Wow
That's not very much sunshine at all. Time to move to Calabria. Can't complain about the weather here in Oregon today. Clear blue sky, still as can be, autumn is the best season here. Maple leaves are turning already but the basil is still alive so life is good.
