Default Easter in Scalea

Hi fifi

My wife and I will be over on the 21st. We will be completing our purchase of an apartment there.

Do you know if the shops, restaurants and bars are open on Friday Saturday and Monday?

I hope that the weather is good at that time of year.

Ciao

John

Hi fifi

We would love to meet and have a drink. Are there any suitable bars in Scalea, where you can meet and ahve a drink?

We have not had much chance to explore the area. Our first visit will necessitate us buying cutlery etc. for the home. Do you have any advice? And what about televisions? Are flat screen tvs expensive out there?

Ciao John

Yes we will be there. Can't wait. We like to go to bar Pier for a coffee or a beer. It's opposite the cemetery!! Not a night spot or glamorous. just a bar.

Default bar pier

Cara fifi

I am sorry but where is the cemetery? We have not yet had a lot of time to explore the area. We do have a city walk map but the bar pier is not listed.

By the way is there a preferred method of heating the apartment, just for the evenings? Calor gas, with its resultant condensation, or is electricity cheap enough to run a fan heater. (We still have to decide on air conditioning.)

Ciao

Well that bar sounds great.(the cemetery is beside the huge supermarket eurospar 3 years on i still dont know the name of the streets)as for heating we use a couple of fan heaters. No matter what you use the apartments dont hold the heat.the eurospar is great for lots of house hold goods and the market on a Monday is great.will look forward to that drink. x Fifi

We will be over there during Easter also (already counting the days). We have found that the Spar is good for basic household items, the Mercato Massimimo (spelling?)- the upstairs portion for towels and bedding and the Cinema for electronics (TV, CD players, vacuum, toaster ovens, etc...). Sometimes the prices are better at Euronics (above the Spar)but on our last trip in December, Cinema had the better prices on washing machines.

As for heating, we have installed the air conditioning/heating wall units in our place and they do a good job keeping the house warm throughout the day and night.

Have fun exploring Scalea - there is so much to see and do!

Hi Janet and Stuart

Thanks for that information. It will help us a lot. Where did you get your air con from and who installed it? Also if you don't mind telling me, how much did it cost?

We look forward to seeing you all at the pier bar. We are flying out from Stanstead on the 21st March and returning home on the 6th April.

Ciao

Hi John:

The heating/air conditioning are basically electric heat pumps so they are relatively energy efficient. We found a plumber to purchase and install them. A 12,000 btu unit costs about 700 euros installed. Our plumber is neat and trustworthy.

We will be in Scalea during Easter so you are welcome to come and see them at our place.

Look forward to meeting up with you perhaps at the Pier at Easter.

Default Easter in Scalea

Hi Janet

Thanks for the information.

One other question. Our Italian friends say that a mosquito wire is essential on all windows and doors. Do you have any experience in buying them?

Ciao

Hi All You Guys-
We'd love to come over at Easter time too, but no firm plans yet. We wonder again about the words you UK folks use. In this case, what does "diy" mean? Our guess is do-it-yourself. Close?!!

Happy Days -- Stay Warm,
Doug and Di

Hi Everyone

It looks as though we will have to reserve places at the bar if we all going to meet there.

Look forward to seeing you all. We will have to arrange time and date nearer the time.

Ciao

Hi John:

We do not have mosquito screens on our windows. Our windows have glass panes and wooden shutters which makes it difficult to use the screening. During the summer, if it is very warm, we use the air conditioning (which we only 3 times last summer during a 3 week period). If it is pleasant, we just close the shutters when the sun starts to set and it seems to keep the mosquitos out of the house. I have also found that after one week of getting bit by the mosquitos, they seem to leave us alone.

We have plenty of mosquitos here in the States so the bugs have no boundaries!

Looking forward to meeting up with you soon!

Janet and Stuart

HI all,
Well, I feel like I have come full circle on this forum--I started out asking about Mosquitoes because I currently live in a low riparian area with abundant wildlife--unfortunately including mean nasty mosquitoes who have the nerve to be out during the whole day. We noticed in Tropea that even leaving the windows open at night did not lure any bugs at all. If we did that here, the moths alone would carry us away. So we have ordered windows with inside shutters which means screens will be very difficult as Janet says. I'm hoping up on the hill in Santa Domenica Talao, it's not really habitat. They like it low. Hope springs eternal.
