Default It just had to be done

I just had to post here as there have been no posts re Santa Domenica Talao.
I must admit I have only been once (although we have driven past a few times once on the way to The Grotto of Romito (but that I will make into another thread).
We went along with Derek & Monica for a look at the house they were thinking of buying and I thought it was a really cute little town.
The church has been recently restored and looks very pretty, there are amazing views towards the sea and I love the way the cemetery is like a little town on its own above the rest (take a look at this picture http://www.scalea.info/forum/album_pic.php?pic_id=225 )
Anyway, along with Derek & Monica who are here full-time now I know there are others who have bought here so if you are out there, tell us about your lovely town, please!
Regards Lesley

Default Buying in Santa Domenica Talao

Hi Lesley, Diana and I met you at a dinner the week before Tony's birthday bash. Thanks to he and David, we found a little place in SD Talao that we'll be closing on late in November and starting the restoration process. It has the serenity we seek while just 8 km from the beach. We look forward to holiday visits there, and eventually fulltime retirement. We've lived many years in the "boonies" of the American West and will enjoy living near people in a nice little town. Maybe we'll bump into you last week of November. Doug

Hi Doug and Diana!

Pleased you found somewhere you liked
Santa Domenica Talao is certainly proving to be a popular little spot (not everyone wants to be right on the beach, after all)
We had dinner with friends there last Friday night at Da Antonia restaurant which is just at the bottom of the village. It was a shame it was evening and dark because they have a fantastic terrace and the views must be tremendous.
David has done a review of it and you can read about it here.

We had mixed antipasti and then I had wild boar pachetti which was absolutely tremendous. Brian had mushroom pasta (the little ear shaped one) and it was great too he says.
Catch you in November, Lesley & Brian

Lesley/Brian, I was excited to see your former post about a Mobili in Scalea that can do our kitchen! Thanks. We'll seek more wooden cabinets as that's how we are, then import the appliances. The little Retro Smeg stuff is cute. We are getting ourselves prepared for smallness. Going from 222 sq meters on 16 hectares (40 ac) to 90m2 in a town. Downsizing ourselves, and maybe "outsourcing" ourselves to the Republic of Italy...a trail worker in the Parco Nationale?? I have a link for a nice French dual fuel "cooker" (as you apparently call them) by Lacanche. Also looking at a gas heating stove....do you find the need for much heat in the winter? We are used to low temperatures around -18 C, hence our desire for the warmer climate!!

We briefly sought the Antonia ristorante when there last, but will certainly try it this next time. I cannot wait to have a place to eat/drink within walking distance vs. 1 hour!! We currently drive 60 miles (96km) to work one way and about that much to find groceries. Those Italian communities, full of people, yet serene, are looking very sweet. Our email is rainshadow@centurytel.net if you'd like to chat more directly. Would be nice to meet again next month. Now, I need to work on an old bloody tractor. This weekend -- back to my Italian lessons. Ciao, Doug

Well we moved from a rambling 17th century farmhouse with 9 acres to a two bed apartment and couldn't be happier. Can sweep through in ten minutes and a lot less work inside and outside (although Brian still has his strimmer moments which I suspect are mainly to escape from me!)
And if you get a Lacanche I shall have to come by to drool (do you know just how much they cost??)
We are looking into some central heating as we already have all the pipework in place (which was done when house was built more than 20 years ago) and currently have a mobile heater fuelled by a gas bottle. It isn't cold like we knew it in England but it gets nippy in the evenings and I think the coldest temperature we noted last winter was 5 degrees. So no frosts here but it might be a couple of degrees cooler where you are a little inland and elevated.
TTFN Lesley
