Stansted to Lamezia - some more info

Hi all,
I have been researching travel possibilities for friends who may be visiting us next year and have discovered the following.
The flight departure time from Stansted to Lamezia is pretty awful as it leaves at 6.10am.... but it does mean that you could be sitting in the sun with a glass of wine in your hand by lunchtime!
It also mean that if you are travelling from much further afield to Stansted you will need to either a) drive through the night or b) stay over the night before.
I have been looking at these options for my friend with a particular date in June in mind and, as of today, the flight out is priced at £8-99, the return at £24.99 and a room with 8 days parking included at the Holiday Inn Express is £109 inclusive (and for 15 days parking comes in at £129).
As my friends (living in the Lake District) would probably always need to pay for car parking and would pay a premium for flying from a closer airport to home (Manchester) it would seem that Stansted/Lamezia (with the shorter travel time at the Italian end) makes pretty good sense at the moment.
This wouldn't necessarily apply on other dates, or wouldn't necessarily be a cost-effective option for anyone who lives a hop, skip and a jump from another airport that flies Rome or Naples and who wouldn't need to pay for car parking.
Anyway, this might be food for thought - I've found that with all things travel-wise it's very much a case of swings and roundabouts.

If anyone is flying in to Lamezia on the first flights from February and would like to post their experiences we would be very interested to hear !!

Hi Lesley and Brian,
I have been looking at the Lamezia Terme option from Scotland. Until now i have used Glasgow Prestwick airport to Rome Ciampino which involved a 1hour 20minute drive from where I live.Next time I go to Scalea I will leave from Edinburgh airport [20mins away] and take an Easyjet flight to Stansted and will travel the next day to Lamezia.The cost of a double room with breakfast thrown in is £60 at the Holiday Inn Express. I have also discovered that the Hotel runs a bus to the airport every 20 mins starting at 4.00 am until 12noon and again from 4.00pm till 12midnight at a cost of £2 per head.The Hotel bus can be found at Bay 10 at the airport Terminal. My wife and myself and 2 friends intend visiting Scalea at the end of April / start of May and I have alredy priced the Flights. The total cost of flights for the 4 of us works out at £341.72 which I reckon is pretty good for travelling all the way from Scotland.

GOOD NEWS ON FLIGHTS FROM FEB BUT NOT THAT GOOD FOR US DOWN IN THE SOUTH WEST BRISTOL AS ITS A LONG WAY STANSTEAD AND FLIGHT TIMES DON'T EVEN COINCIDE WITH COACH TIMES.

GETTING THERE BY CAR IS A NIGHTMARE ITS EASIER AND CHEAPER TO FLY TO ROME AS THE COACH FARE TO STANSTEAD WORKS OUT A VERY RIDICULOUS PRICE .

We have booked from Shannon, Ireland to Lamezia Terme, going to Scalea for St. Patrick's weekend, we have to overnight in Stansted on the way out, but its all fine for the return.
The Hilton in Stansted seems to be cheap at £ 62.50 for a room rate, the budget accommodation further away was £ 75.
I have looked at car hire, http://www.argusrentals.com seem a way cheaper than Hertz, anyone have any experience of them in Lamezia ?
Will have to see how it goes on the day.

Before you book your car hire try economycarhire.com. I used this company on my last visit to Scalea when I drove down from Rome Ciampino.This company has a full English backup and you have the option of an extra driver at no extra cost. They also operate from Lamezia.I certainly found them OK and was given an upgrade at no extra cost.

Tried that company as you suggested, but they still aren't as cheap as http://www.arguscarrental.com/
There must be a catch somewhere !!
