Writing from Scalea. There was a bit about the new service in the local paper the other day - bottom of page 14 so it wouldn't seem to be that world-shattering to the Calabrese! Don't know if everyone using the site has already been to Lamezia but if there is anyone that hasn't been, it seems a user-friendly airport - a bit like Ciampino, parking and buses right outside. We went out of curiosity and because on the Sila, where we set out to go to, you could just about see the front of the car and snow chains were advised! Then did a sort of trial run back to Scalea. All a bit academic as unfortunately Lamezia is no good for us (to get to Stanstead is just a pain from the SW). Shame as would really like to use it and it would be much easier. But... to cheer up those like us that won't be able to use it, the trip from Naples or Rome is a lot more scenic and also the road Lamezia-Scalea is a potential death trap (there are always bits in the papers about it and the latest accidents). At one point we were overtaken by the car behind overtaking us and two cars in front on a curve. If you can survive though it's a really good way of getting to Scalea and am really jealous of all you Stanstead users! All of us other airport users will just have to go on about how marvellous it is being able to stop off in Rome or Naples and try not to get too green!
PS The weather here has been something else but you'll have probably seen it on the Euro weather reports! When it hasn't been raining it's been what would in Margate or Bognor be called "bracing"!

Hi Margaret,
Thanks for your report about the road from Lamezia to Scalea.
Sounds scary!
Having said that I have been trying to point any possible visitors to us next year to this route as it will nice to be able to pop and pick them up from the airport (assuming we don't kill them on the way back 8O )
I shall start a new topic with info I have discovered during my research that might be helpful for anyone making plans to visit Scalea/Calabria via Lamezia.
Very best wishes, Happy New Year!
Lesley & Brian

Hi L&B - Happy New Year! - to you and all! We too have been going round in circles seeing if there is any chance of using Lamezia - but nothing seems to pan out. One way we came up with was Lamezia - Paris and then Paris- Devon (there are flights to Devon from Paris!) which on the return bit seemed to involve only half a day's travelling(!). Then we worked out the cost and despite the Exeter-Paris bit being one of those £5+ efforts the total still came to something astronomical - so it's Rome for us again. Went to a 'do' the other night and one of the topics of conversation was how to get out of anywhere in the SW without going to London - which everyone dreads. There MUST be a market for ways of avoiding London. People are trying all sorts of odd combinations - one person suggested flying to Ireland from either Newquay, Exeter or Plymouth and then on! A really odd thing is that it's now easier to get to New York or Canada from here than it is to get to most places in Europe! One person is now using Brest in France but from Brest you can only get to other places in France.....and so it goes on! Back to the drawing board! Cheers M
