A site worth looking at is www.auto-europe.com. We are hiring for 15 days for £247 from Ciampino unlimited mileage. Buon viaggio.

Hi Cazz - I don't think I'm the right person to ask about driving in Italy! The last time I was behind the wheel of a car in Italy was several centuries ago when I was working at one of your favourite places - Mergellina. You'll remember what the traffic's like there - I don't think I've recovered since! Having said that, I think driving in Scalea is worth thinking about, as it's not on Naples' level!. Until now my husband has driven in Italy - the car has always been insured in his name - but we've been pondering the car problem i.e. wondering whether it was worth having one left in Scalea. Did wonder about a 'communal Brits or expats car'! but I guess there'd be complications. It seems a bit daft though, everybody hiring or keeping cars when they're only there for weeks at a time. Anyway, as I was left without a car last time, that's why I tried to gen up about the buses. Actually, even if I had a car I think I'd still like to use the buses a lot - if I can ever find out when they run! Apparently buses to several of the villages stop near the church or on the main road so in theory it should be easy to do trips to all sorts of places by bus - will keep researching - as I said we're going to write ...to someone, anyone.....! Cheers M

Default car hire

Hiya Everyone
My daughter Danielle has just come back from Scalea and she hired a car at Lamezia Airport
via Auto Europa and they have walloped her for 597.2 eruo + 20%^Whe she picked up the car at the airport they gave her an upgrade Fiat but the car was filthy and had some damage which was pointed out. Unfortunately she did not bring her
credit card with her and she signed an agreement and they have taken euro 585.2 +20%
from her account and alas she did not take out any additional insurance. They have sent photographs of the scratches which she is convinced were there when she picked the car up. Alas a very expensive lesson learned. She is fighting it but people beware

Gosh all these expensive experiences. I'm gonna try this one or Budget in Scalea on my November trip. Sounds a lot cheaper than what we did with Hertz in July.

Hi Doug, glad you found the site. I think it seems really good value. We'll see when we get to Rome what the service is like. I do know that budget in Scalea is very expensive. There is a local guy Giuliano De Presbiteris. He has fairly basic cars available.at cheaper rates than Budget. Tel. 0985.21672 or 90483, cell. 3388371594. Sorry, no website. Perhaps if you get the train to Scalea you could book a car through Economy from Lamezia for a few days when you've sorted yourself out. Scalea to Lamezia on the train is no problem and because they tend to use agencies off the airport sites, they hay even pick you up from the station to get the car. Worth a try.

Default Car hire

Hi Maisy

Have you read my thread named Scalea on this forum
http://www.scalea.info/forum/chit-ch...90-scalea.html (scalea)

I too suffered from this type of scam from the same firm. It is important that you check the car thoroughly at collection and not sign a thing until you have done. The Telegraph advise that you insist on them accompanying you to the car and noting any blemishes and checking all the car wipers washers electric windows etc. Of course they just want to give you the keys and hasten your departure than have the inefficiency of spending more time with each customer.

Who did your daughter hire the car through was a brooker on the internet because they too have responsibilities in a case like this. You might find that contacting the British or American branch of Auto Europa can also be helpful.

Best of luck.

Ciao

John
