:?: Just posted message under another heading but will repeat it here. I would have thought it would be OK to practice Italian as long as it's kept separate and under another heading or something. I'd have thought the site was for English speakers and particularly those with little or no Italian. Also who's going to correct the 'pidgin' Italian that's bound to result? - with no-one understanding anything. Or are the 'Italian ' postings going to be done bi-lingually so that even if someone writes nonsense in Italian we'll know what they're getting at? Also there are other sites in Italian. Just a thought.

Yes, well ... I think Margaret is right: I made a mess by posting the original suggestion under the "Scalea forum" and then made the mess worse by trying to correct things and posting to the "Chit-chat forum".

At this point, it may be worth asking Dave to merge the two threads into something like "Post your queries in Italian". This may be best placed under the "chit-chat forum" but, there may be better places.

Hi ,Would like to agree with Margaret and say that if you wish to post in Italian ,you should post it in english underneath it .That way we could all understand it and would get a little practice in as well....Cool :lol:

As I am the queen of pidgin Italian, I would not want to be responsible for anyone learning the wrong thing from me, but it would be fantastico to have one thread dedicated to communication in Italian. I don't think I could/would want to spend the time translating my own, would take the wind from my sails, and probably urge me on to use a crutch.

Hi - really don't want to put the mockers on all this - now there's a phrase I'll try and translate** - but who's the poor soul who's going to correct all the pidgin that's going to be posted? Or are we going to develop a new language - Engscalean? It's so easy to get a phrase in your noddle and there it sticks for eternity - says one who's accumulated a whole lot of pidgin over the years - though I usually get understood if I shout loud enough - kidding!

Just had a thought Di and Doug - does 'put the mockers on' need translating into American! You know what they say - 'Divided by a common language' - there's a thought - maybe we'd be more united with pidgin Italian!

PS Happy Birthday Di - Tanti auguri. Was going to translate that as loads of wishes but I guess that shows the problem - you just can't translate word for word or even phrase for phrase very easily. Anyway guess you got the gist!

Visto? Facile trovare gli errori e nessuno se ne preoccupa. Benefit of the doubt, made the assumption that you didn't mean to be sarcastic, made a typo and, therefore, didn't really want to have anything to do with the "scorreggia". Incidentally, where did you get the notion that Italian isn't idiomatic?

Heh heh, no Margaret, I'm afraid American dialect does not use "mockers" anywhere, but we get the gist. Yes it might become a chore to critique a lot of posts and the volunteered reviewing could be retracted! I would accept most comments myself, but because I often confuse my Spanish with Italian, I am in trouble a lot. BTW, Being civil servants (UK term), we promise to not use government-speak herein!! Don't throw the dictionary away yet Elgian - it is scoraggiare - it looks odd to my English speaking eyes as well but a typo it ain't. I wouldn't say Italian is totally not idiomatic, just less so than English. Wonder if it might be a good idea for someone to correct just the common phrases that come on here - e.g. not 'ci parliamo presto' as posted but 'ci parleremo presto' - unfortunately for us pidgin speakers Italian is stricter with the tenses. Luckily pidgin secures cups of coffee and pizzas OK. Wondered about the common phrases getting corrected though as I've got too much pidgin embedded already!

Cripes - have just gone back and looked at my original message and I did type in an e instead of an a. Wonder if my English speaking ears didn't want it to be an e. The waters get muddier - errors getting corrected and uncorrected and then corrected. Sorry Elgian! Wonder even more if it might be an idea just to correct any comman phrases which are really wrong - unless there's someone out there who wants the huge job of correcting everything we write in pidgin!

This could be never-ending - just re-read my last bit and put comman instead of commen. Guess we're going to get even more typos in Italian - or maybe not, as I guess we'd have to type it really slowly - which again didn't prevent my 'scoreggiare'. (That should be scoraggiare before it gets permanently into the Engscalean dictionary!)
