Default Buses

Has anyone had experince of buses. Used them last time in Scalea but there don't seem to be any up-to-date timetables apart from those for the long-distance ones. There are lots that go from one end of Scalea to another and to the villages around but pinning down their times can be a job and a half. The Tourist office has some but they also don't show all the stops or the routes e.g. I caught one and the driver didn't know he was going where I wanted to go - one of the other passengers told him he was! Ok - charm of Italy etc but help!

Hi Margaret

Finalmente!! Somebody has finally spoken out! Guess what I didn't even know there were any bus's in Scalea I've certainly never seen one and this includes Taxi's too we only saw one the day we arrived the first time outside the Train Station.

I was chattting with my sis the other day and she suggested going to the Tourist Board too. I really think something needs to be done about this as its a serious problem in Scalea for those that don't hire cars. We have our place at the back end of Scalea but it is a lovely walk we do enjoy the walk very much but one should have the choice.

We would use the bus if it were available. Maybe we could write to the coucil but I don't know how to go about this at the moment I suppose it wouldn't be too difficult to find out I think most people that live there probably have cars maybe thats why they don't provide a good reliable service.

We feel the same but we don't have any answers

Hi Cazz, hold the front page - we are going to write to anyone we can think of re the buses. The bus I caught from the centre out to the church was at a good time (1 - ish) if you've done shopping and there'd been another one just before. It's just finding out the times! That particular one served the school at the back (liceo scientifico) but stopped at the crossroads near the church so ideal (The bullet-proof vest was a joke (I think) but will write more re that in other bit later - having said that, there was a shoot-out in Piazza Garabaldi not that long ago.....)

Hi Cazz, the shoot-out wasn't that long ago and even got reported on the UK news - we rang Italy as soon as we heard it! I think it was just a case of organised crime straying out of their usual areas - which are on the outskirts, where life can be quite dangerous. I would imagine the shooting in Piazza Garibaldi (I think it was in or outside a bar) was unusual so made the news - so maybe not any need for bullet-proof vests yet! We have started the ball rolling about info on buses but Italy being Italy don't hold your breath. We are in Scalea again in December so will try and do some digging then - but in any case am going to get my bike fixed up! Tra M

Ciao Maragaret

Good idea about the bike! We purchased two bikes whilst we were in Scalea so when we are out there at least we can have SOME transport! Will look forward to hearing as much information as possible about Scalea bus's.

Would also like to know how your holiday goes/ weather /places you visited etc.

Back to Napoli thanks for that info on Napoli we can thankfully say that on our many trips to Napoli we have never as yet encountered anything bad yet but we know its there like in all cities.

I think we could do with some bullet proof vests in some of our cities in the UK don't you!

Regards

Cazz

Hello Cazz,
On the subject of buses----When we bought our apartment which is in the Bussola area we understood there was a bus during the summer. Well we were in Scalea in May, June, and September and have still to see this particular bus which is supposed to run between the Bussola area and Scalea town.I think summer must mean the month of August. However on the bright side I might become the fittest 63 year old in Scalea with all the exercise and effort striding up that hill.I,m certainly ready for a nice cool beer when I finally reach my apartment.
Billy.

Ciao Billy

Its true lots of walking in Scalea which is what we definatly do less of when we are in UK .
How many minutes walk is Bussola from Scalea town center would be interested to know.

Its a fair walk too from our apartment but is well well worth the walk as its such a pretty walk.

I am glad you are enjoying your time in Scalea/ Bussola its nice to hear of others that have places there as it can feel lonely if you don't know anyone else.

However on the subject of Bus's I beleive Margarete is finding out about them but otherwise maybe we can all wait as the local council are going to see more and more people in Scalea in need of bus transport especially as it gets busier and busier as the years go on with more Brits buying and possibly moving out there.

Regards for now

CAZZ

Hello Cazz,
I,ve never really timed the walk between the Bussola area and Scalea town but at a guess I would say 20 minutes downhill and about 30 minutes going up! We are at the San Nicola end of Scalea at the top of Via Faro. The views are quite spectacular when we walk up and down.We [ my wife and myself ] probably wont be back in Scalea until Spring next year. Meantime I'm trying to teach myself some Italian with the use of books and CDs.
Regards,
Billy.

Hi Cazz et all- have gathered qute a few timetables (from tourist office, web and bus drivers!) but am reluctant to put them on site as they tend to change (from summer to winter of course but also some buses don't seem to materialise). Also can't see how you can find out the routes. Anyway, am going to give them a go sometime but will definitely take a toothbrush as not over confident of getting back from wherever I get to! More news when I have any.

Hi Cazz
I'm afraid the Italian lessons have fallen a little by the wayside at the moment. We are moving house in February in Scotland and we have started to get rid of 28 years of junk accumulated over this period. After New Year we will start packing up gradually. We are moving to a smaller house with a lot less garden and less maintenance and as a result will hope to spend more time in Scalea in 2006. Have a great Xmas and New Year.
All the Best from Scotland,
Billy & Sheila.

Hi Billy

All the best on your moving and hope you have a wonderful break over the new year and what not.
Smaller house more time to yourselves.

Incidently whilst we were in Scalea the week of September 21st we met a lovely couple one evening they were drinking a bottle of wine and viewing Scalea from the high road . We did stop and have a chat and we were with an Italian couple.

It was myself Carol my mum Lilian and my sister Tina.

That wasn't you by any chance was it ?
If so hello again and if not well bring on more Scottish people in Scalea its not often we get the opportunity to meet Scottish people down here in the west country so the more the merrier!

All the best for now and look forward to hearing from you soon.

If Margaret is around hi and hope to hear from you soon

Regards and maybe see some of you in the spring or summer

Ciao tutti

Hi Cazz,
Buon Natale . We were in Scalea at that time and think we met the same couple that you met on the High road. They have bought an apartment in the same area as ourselves. They come from Livingston in Scotland which is not too far from where we live. Until then thought we were the only Scottish pioneers in Scalea!

Hi all,
Whilst rummaging around I came across some info re buses.

As Margaret has already mentioned elsewhere - thanks Margaret! - the stops are not well documented so it's a little difficult to know just what passes any particular spot you might be looking to visit - and the timetables for some of the following look like they may be for last year (but one would imagine they wouldn't change too much from year to year?).

I cant find a way to link to the page directly but if you go here and then click on the 'Collegamenti in Pullman' link on the left hand side under information there is a list of routes and times.

http://www.comune.scalea.cosenza.it/

Hope this helps,
Lesley & Brian

Hi Lesley - just had a look on that site and it's more or less the ones I got - I think there are some others maybe but will check - but think you can see the problem if you look at no. 4 on the list - if you want to go from Scalea you get there after the only bus comes back - as I said, I think it's geared to schools maybe. Last time I sat down with an Italian who'd lived there all their lives and they couldn't work out the logic of any of the timetables so don't know if any of us will have any better luck! May try writing again as it would be really good to know the routes - would think sometimes it would be possible to use combination of bus and train.

Can you please tell me about buses from Lamezia airport to Scalea. How do we find times - we don't seem to be able to find anything on internet (just train times).
Thanks for all your help.

Default Re: Buses and Bus-spotting

We were in the main Piazza of Belvedere Centro Storico yesterday at 1.15pm and -lo and behold- two buses arrived.
I made a note of the route on the front of each of them.

Grisolia - Scalea - Diamante - Belvedere

Macellina - Orsomarso - Scalea - Belvedere

Afraid I have no idea what times they arrive or leave the other destinations - maybe we can all keep an eye out , make a note of the time and post if we see one.
