Default Getting to Scalea from Dublin

Hi I was looking at the members list and saw a few people from Ireland on it.I would like to know what is the best way to travel from Dublin to Scalea. When I went in October I flew into Naples.I hired a Car and drove down. From now untill next March Aer lingus are not flying into Naples. If anyone knows of an easier way to get here I would be delighted to hear about it.

Default Dublin to Scalea

Hi Annette,|Nice to see a few more Irish going down. The only way to do it ,is the way you said. You will have to go Rome -Campino out of season. This trip takes about four hours .Its very direct to drive. You could go stanstead to Lamezia but the flights out of Stanstead leave at six in the morning and you have to check in at four.Sorry i could not be any better help....Cool

Hi thanks for the info re flights .I have tried Ryan Air via London but having to book a hotel in Stansted makes the trip very expensive.Have you tried taking the train from Rome or is that an option.Do you know a car hire company in Scalea.Annette

Default Travel

Hi ,Have not tried the train yet but have been busy on the forum gathering info.Check back some recent posts.I am going to rome in Feb and will check further then. The car hire is on the main road through Scalea, between the hotel Principal and a restaurant called Silver .Will post the name later. There is also a Budget on this stretch of road as well,so no problems hiring down there. Cool.

Hi Annette,
The winter schedule has Monday flights from Stansted to Lamezia later in the day so it may be possible to fly from Dublin-Stansted-Lamezia in one day without a stopover. The Friday flights are still early from this end so Lamezia-Stansted-Dublin should also be possible without needing to stay over.
Also as Ryanair are now flying to Lamezia from Milan and Pisa, could they be options?
(Dublin-Milan-Lamezia or Dublin-Pisa-Lamezia)
Regards, Lesley

Hi Annette
I have not plucked up enough courage yet to drive in Italy so have taken train from Rome a few times. There is a direct train leaves about 1.15pm that gets you down to Scalea at approx 6.30pm Cost is about 30euro.
Cheers
Linda

Hello Mac,
If you can drive around Dundee, I think you would manage ok in Scalea and surrounding area. My son is at Abertay University and I have found that Dundee can be pretty busy with traffic at times. To change the subject---Do you know any good eating places near Dundee city centre? So far we have tried the Hungry Horse out near Dundee Airport and also a restaurant out past Camperdown Park[the name escapes me at the moment],both of which are good.Just wondered if there was anywhere near the centre. Regards, Billy.

Hi Mac (Linda) and Billy,

We usually hire a car at Lamezia but with flights being limited in Winter we are flying into Rome in December, this does looke like a nightmare trying to get through the Rome traffic!!(From the Termine Station. We ( Mark ) wrote off the first hire car we had last December in Praia!!

I actually got my first driving licence in Milan circa 35 years ago but must admit I have only driven from Santa Maria del Cedro to Scalea since!!

Don't know what Dundee is like now, but I spent all my childhood in "The Ferry". Do you remember Brodies donkeys?? That is really showing my age!!

Hi VTrusty and Billy

I cant remember the donkeys. I always think of ice cream when I think of 'the ferry'.
Billy - Have you tried Papa Joes at the bottom of Whitehall Street. I was there last night and it was really nice. Sorry but there are very few nice eating places in the centre of Dundee. You need to travel eg 'the ferry' where there is a lot of pubs serve good food. I think you may be meaning the Birkhill Inn which is on the main road after Camperdown Park or there is a restaurant in the travel lodge beside the cinema at camperdown - both are good.
Cheers Linda
