You are probably looking at about 30-35 euros at current standard rates for 2nd class. I don't think you can check for journeys that far in advance, it usually just says that there was no solution. Obviously this may be subject to any price increases but hope it helps as a guide.

hi Cool,
It will depend on day of the week and time of travel (and if they have any special offers on and if you qualify for concessions).
We did it once for 29 euros when they had tickets at 29 and 39 euros in First Class but it was a special offer and the best seats sold out quickly.
have you tried it in English?

Thanks for the replys.I wonder if that price range is for one way or return.I am trying to see if it is better to rent the car in Rome or wait until I get down to Scalea.I would like the train for the sefety of not being on the road. Also I could sit back and enjoy the scenary on the way down.I would also have to take into account the taxi from the airport to the train station and the taxi in Scalea to the house or the car rental depot. If it works out roughly the same I would get the train.

Hi Cool,
Our fare was 29 euros per person one way from Paola to Rome on the Eurostar high speed train.
(That was in November and we were heading back for Xmas - we then flew back into Lamezia in January so didn't take the train).
I think the price fluctuates wildly dependent on:
a) special offers
b) date, day and time of travel
c) the service you choose (fast or slower trains)
d) when you book (ie way in advance or last minute)

We did the same journey in August when we had to get back to England quickly because my granny had died and we paid 246 euros for two of us return (although that did include First Class one way and a sleeper on the return journey as we were leaving Rome at about 11pm).
Can't find the ticket info to see how the separate journeys were priced but if I come across it I'll post it here.
Hope this is at least a little bit helpful, Lesley

It is a lovely stress-free journey on the train. Another alternative to a taxi from the airport to the station are the buses that whizz backwards and forwards on a regular basis. We have taken the Terravision bus that is promoted heavily by Ryanair and Easyjet
http://www.terravision.eu/rome_ciampino.html
And last time we also tried another coach that was doing the same thing but was cheaper (no recollection of their name but they all are well organised).
If there is a big gang of you then a taxi might be no more expensive than a number of bus fares so it will need some research, I guess.
HTH, Lesley

Hi cool we use the train during August months car hire is so pricy by train one way For 2 adults and 3 kids about e180 and thats using Silla non stop to Scalea or take the A to Rome have a wee break then go again. You can only book a couple of months in advance.Register first then go ahead and book.We now book are tickets a couple of months before otherwise you wont get the train you want, also you just print off home then key in code at station and there you have your ticket.Have to say I really like the train but we are only a 6 min walk from station in Sclea so its dead handy for us.I also have plenty of names of hotels (cheap and clean) in Rome and Napoli beside stations if you are ever stuck. cheers fifi

Hi Cool am still here had 3 fab weeks in Scalea, but works needed on house.I head over to Rome and Napoli a bit but just dont get enough time to head to apartment. There are 2 trains that go direct from Rome to Scalea no changes 1st is called the Silla cant remember the other so its pretty comfi and the A is the fastest about an hour and 15 next is the Eurostar an hour and 30 thats from Rome to Napoli. then Eurostar or ICplus from Napoli change at Praia on to regional for 30 mins.Sounds a bit messy but its choice really. We went over last Feb. with kids for a week and had a great time so enjoyed it.Hired the car and drove from Rome, got to see lots of sights, even to the slopes for a bit of snow.Would love to go again but oldest daughter has junior cert must stay put. cheers fifi

You dont always get a quote on prices with trenitalia we booked with railitalia and they gave quotes on prices, i think we paid about £100 for two adults return from Rome to scalea direct but this maybe expensive as it was our first time by train (september) and i dont always get the time to shop around.

There is a site 'the man in seat 61' which deals with train travel in Europe - just heard it mentioned on the rqdio. It seems quite good and might be worth a look.

Hi Cool, we paid €75 for 2 adults and 1 child from Rome to Scalea in early November. Not bad considering the trains are so efficient !!

Hi cool the price one way no change of train is €98 for 2 adults 2 children second class, from Rome to Scalea its about 4and half hours travel. We have taken this train and its comfie enough. But remember to factor in a over night stay depending on your flight times. If you need to book a cheap hotel let me know I have stayed in plenty.Book your train tickets on line( no prob just register first)and book a few months in advance or you wont get a seat. Here is the site.trenitalia .it,.cheers fifi
