Default Restaurants & eating out

Now that there is quite a gang of us (yet another lovely Saturday night out when we caught up with lots of folk we had met before and met some new faces too!) and because we don't all have places in Scalea I was thinking we should post some info on various restaurants around and about.
We have some lovely places over our way (Sabbia D'Oro, D'Aprile D'Aprile being just two that we frequent as they are very local to us) and we have also visited many others that merit a mention (I very much like Villa Brazzano, the venue for Saturday night as Angelo is such a good host).
There's a wonderful Agriturismo just outside Belvedere called Antica Palmento, as well as Fattoria D'Arieste (where we have been for many previous get-togethers).
The "French" restaurant in Scalea, Chez Enzo, (run by an Italian who worked for some time in Paris) is lovely for a change (Duck A L'Orange, Beouf Bourgignon and a chocolate pudding to die for just a few of the specialities).
Val & Mark have also told me about Erold's Pub in Santa Maria Del Cedro and an Agriturismo they have discovered nearby.
Who would like to set the ball rolling with a post about their favourite eating place - and also just what makes it special?
Lesley

For gastronimical delights Lesley I probably wouldn't recommend Erolds Pub, he is cheap cheerful good wine and just 2 paces from us, however I would recommend "La Pastorella" at Maiera, relativly new Agriturismo, lovely restaurant, great food beautiful view and very good prices.

Thanks Val!
Do you think La Pastorella will be open all year round? Maybe we could go for dinner when you are over in December?
Best wishes, Lesley

Sounds great Val, look forward to hearing from you 8-))

As we haven't had any more restaurant info for a while I am going to make a start with the restaurant in Scalea where we ate last Saturday night.
It is called Chez Enzo la Parisien (according to the business card I picked up) and I am going to start a new post so I can try to fit everything in,
regards Lesley

Default Chez Enzo La Parisien - Restaurant - Scalea

Chez Enzo le Parisien
Bar-Ristorante-Creperia
Via Atillo Pepe
Scalea 0985 91716

Aperitif - white wine with kir
Lovely complimentary small platter of Hors d'Oeuvre (included bruschetta, fritatta, spinach).

Starters include:
Avocado prawns
Salad capricciosa
Snails

Primi
Various pasta & rissotto dishes

Mains - fish
Salmon
Swordfish

Mains - meat
Pork with marsala sauce
Steak - peppered or plain
Beouf Bourgignon
Duck a l'orange

Hot chocolate pudding with gooey centre, creme anglaise and dollop of tremendous ice-cream (ideas invited for the secret ingredient in the ice-cream. It was lovely but neither Rita or I could pinpoint it).

Carafes of house wine, red and white but we have previously had a rather lovely bottle of red also.

Digestivo - Rum and ginger (blows your socks off ! and the reason I was behaving like an idiot at the end of the night).

The owner is lovely, the decor is beautiful (background music rather than a TV blaring in the corner).
Great presentation (oh and as Tony mentioned the chairs are very comfy)
Menu is representative as it basically is just what I can remember either having or saw on the menu.

Chez Enzo is on the next block to the North of Hotel Santa Caterina, set back from and lower than the main SS18 (Corsa Meditteraneo). There is a lit sign here next to the main road which I believe says Enzo Le Parigiano or something similar.

Heading North towards Scalea along the SS18 immediately after the Hotel Santa Caterina there is a slip road to the left and at the bottom of this Chez Enzo will be in front of you.

Otherwise - from the front of the Spar head into town along Via Fuime Lao. Turn left onto Via Attilo Pepe (which runs alongside the soccer pitch). Pass Planet Food on your right and keep right to go under the main road (SS18) and Chez Enzo will be on your right after you pass under the bridge.

I can't get a map to point directly to the restaurant but on the following map if you follow the Via Attilo Pepe under the main road then Chez Enzo is at the end of this road on the corner where it meets Via Tirreno.

Hope this is helpful, Lesley 8-)

A perfect post, Val!
We aren't all always looking for "Haute Cuisine" 8-)

Cheap, cheerful and local often hits the spot perfectly!

Anyone else with any more eating/drinking places???

Doesn't need to be 'perfect' cos none of us are BUT maybe it is " great for families" or "fast service so it's great if you are in a hurry" or "a romantic setting" or "the best spaghetti I've ever eaten" ? or anything really that makes it stand out for you ??

Please let us know, sharing is good 8-)

Lesley & Brian (And we are looking forward enormously to trying out La Pastorella, Val!)

Default Restuarants

Il Furrano is a great seafood restuarant down by the beach in San Nicole Arecella. Unfortunately its not directly on the beach but it has a great atmosphere and surroundings. Does anyone know of a restuarant or bar that has seaviews in the local area?

Thanks Mary!
I have seen a sign somewhere for If Furano but have never been.
Do you know if they are open all year round?
Sabbia D'oro is right on the golden sandy beach the far side of Diamante.
D'Aprile & D'Aprile directly overlooks the promenade in Belvedere.
I'll post something about both of these separately but in the meantime...

Tartana Club in Cirella is a beautiful restored old building in a really romantic setting on the cliffside directly overlooking the sea and Cirella Island.

Down quite a few steps so not great for anyone with mobility problems but worth it for the views.

hi all

.i spent afew days full board at the hotel grande derosa and i must say that the food and service were fantastic.. the buffet at the start was full of local calabresan food, which i couldn't name but they were delicious. the menu was a tad expensive and not very child friendly ( no pizzas ètc)but would be a nice place for adults to go.
ciao a tutti

Il Furrano is open all year I was told. La Scogliera in Scalea is good too as you can sit out side and hear the sea although not see it!

Default Chez Enzo

Just back from Scalea. After reading about this restaurant on the website thought we would give it a try. It was excellent.

Food was superb and decor, music etc., brilliant.

Would recommend this to everyone. Will be back on next visit. Can't wait.

Hi Lesley & Brian, if La Pastorella is not open (I will phone them Friday when we get to Scalea, do you have an alternative, (we haven't been to Enzo's so I wouldn't mind giving that a whirl unless you have any other suggestions.

Speak to you soon

Val & mark

Some of our friends in Santa Maria have also been asking about having a get together at the weekend and mentioned somewhere in the village - would assume it to be in S Maria Centro Storico (don't know the name - my memory is like a sieve but I will check what they were planning and see if it would work, do you mind going out as a group?. I also was telling them about La Pastorella and that it came recommended!).
Am I right in thinking you have my mobile so you can text or call us when you get here and we can firm up all the details then?
Best wishes, Lesley & Brian

Yes a group sounds good, we are always happy to meet new people. I don't know of one in the Centro Storico but would be interested to know where it is.

Yes I have your number and will text you when we arrive.

Best Wishes
Val

Apologies... have realised "Brains A La Lesley" dcn't actually exist sometimes, if in fact at all -ever! ............my phone conversation I now believe was talking about Da Antonio which is in "a" Centro Storico just not the centro Storico I expected because I was talking to Rita who lives in Santa Maria Del Cedro Centro Storico and it seems she was talking about a meet up with Helena & Jerry who were over to sign up for their purchase in Santa Domenica - must pay more attention, most pay more attention, must pay more attention, must pay more attention......
Apologies, trying my best and all that, Lesley (and Brian of course)

Anyhows,
Following my self-inflicted confusion last week we met up with Rita & Peter, Monica & Derek and Helena & Jerry for a meal at Da Antonio, Santa Domenica on Thursday.
Lovely food and a great host (and he has a bit of English if you push him!)
Great place!
Lesley
