Default Italian Residency and related things

Hi Folks- Those expats that are living there fulltime may have some insights. The various books and websites we have seen are sometimes at odds. 1) does the act of purchasing a property and paying taxes make you a "resident" under Italian law or is there other paperwork and registration? 2) Once a resident and paying taxes, are you eligible for healthcare or is there an additional step? Or is it possible? Or does one even want it?!! Maybe it's as easy to hang onto the insurance from the home country.

Is it also now true that you cannot purchase a car in Italy without residency status? Thx, doug

Yes, there is other paperwork and registration needed! Things have changed recently and, most especially, the rules differ dependent on whether you are an EU citizen or not. (Not sure just what your own circumstances are so I'll leave it there).

Again this depends on your own circumstances. EU citizens can expect reciprocal medical arrangements - but there are also limitations.

I know people who have bought a car without residency and others who have been unable to do so. The question of insuring the vehicle before you have residency may be more of the crux of the matter, it seems.
Not sure I've been particularly helpful here, Lesley
