Default Cats and Dogs!

Hi
We have just returned from Scalea (we have a new apartment at La Bruca near Marcellina) and there seemed to be a few stray cats/dogs around. One cat had a broken foot and although we fed them all the time we were there - we had no idea whether there was a vet or anything to get some treatment? I have read the previous posts on animals but wondered if anyone had any up to date information?
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks
Debbie

Hi Debbie,You can try www.legadelcane.org website. They are the Lega Nazionale per la Difesa del Cane. (Italian equivalent of the National Canine Defense League which is now the Dogs Trust) They are associate members of WSPA. It looks like they have 5 offices or contacts in Calabria, the nearest being Lamezia. I don't know what they have set up in the region or if they have kennels etc for re-homing or neutering/veterinary projects. If you look on WSPA website they also give out a charity for cats that operates in Rome, again not sure if they operate out of that area but they could maybe assist in emergencies, ie vet fees etc.

There is a Vet in Viale Primo Maggio almost opposite the Hotel Continental. But unless you could get more info from those charities you would have to pay any costs yourself.

Not too helpful, but may point you in the right direction. It is possible that the Canine Defense League may consider putting resources into the Scalea area if they felt there was a big enough problem and that they would be able to get sufficient funds. Not sure what Local Authority involvement if any applies in the area with regards to strays etc.
