Default christmas and new year ????

hi,
We were wondering what xmas is like in Scalea?? We have booked a ski-ing holiday for xmas, but feel a bit sad not to be goin "home" We can get a refund if we cancel before next weekend!!!! Are the restaurants and shops still open for business? Are there any festivals taking place? Its really for me and Emily cos we know Steve will be up the mountains for 7 hours a day on his bike, as usual!!!
p.s Are you going back to frosty, icy, Cumbria for xmas, Lesley and Brian?????

Hi Gill,
Nope we are staying here for Christmas!
And we are expecting to catch up with a few folk who will be here or who are coming over.
Last year Melanie compiled a list of opening times and you can view it here: http://www.scalea.info/opening_hours_christmas_2006.php

I'll ask if it will be similar for this year but I would assume so.
Hope this helps, (and you can always go ski-ing here at Christmas!)
Lesley

Hi, We have just completed on the purchse of our apartment in Scalea and are going out on the 27th October for our first visit. We met some of you i.e Lesley & Brian (unforgetable really !!!), Paul & Mel, Billy and Sheila and The Kennedy at Cirella on a Saturday night in June. We hope to meet up with you again over time.

We are also coming over for Christams and the New Year so we are glad to hear there wil be a few people around.

Also I am wondering whether we will be able to buy basic essentials like, bed linen in Scalea just to tide us over when we arrive.

Caroline

Oh my, just what did we do that particular night to make us unforgettable......!

The place Gill is thinking of is Il Mercatissimo. Upstairs sells linens, clothing etc. and downstairs is a supermarket.
Here's a link to an interactive map.

BTW, even though its 27 degrees outside during the day we have a quilt on the bed now.

If it helps at all there is also a place on Via Fume Lao. If you walk towards the town centre it is on the left just after the football stadium junction. It is on the way to the supermarket that Lesley mentioned so you could probably compare the two. We got some bits from both places in September.

All the best

Andy

Hi Andy & Kath,

I know the place you mean but have never been in, we've only driven past so don't know what it is called.
It looks rather nice from outside though. Were the prices reasonable?
Regards Lesley
(Off to Antica Osteria to watch the rugby tonight. Does anyone have a mobile number for Cool (John) so we can let him know where we will be later?)

Hi Lesley

There wasn't much difference in the prices at Mercatissimo or the biancheria on Fume Lao. In the end we got some bits from both shops and the Monday market based on stock availabilty more than anything else. However Kath informs me that the pillowcases from the biancheria were made from a good quality fabric. Unfortunatley in the interest of protecting my last few crumbs of street cred (if I ever had any to begin with)I would have to refrain from commenting.

LOL!

(Andy, next time just write your message and put Kath's name on the end of it so it looks like she's written it - no-one would know!

 )

Hi folks, Thanks for all the info re shopping. Lesley - you and Brian were impeccably behaved when we met but Brian is a quite a character. Plus as I recall there was a story about an aftrnoon of wine consumption and leading Mel (I Think) astray. We would of course be happy to be led astray sometime !!!! Pity about the weather forecast but hopefully it will improve by next Saturday.

Ironically it is beautiful here in Mayo at the moment. We spent the night on a little island in Clew Bay with friends in their eco-friendly house. We even gathered mussels at night with torches and had them for lunch today. Islands are alway special becuase you feel as if you are in another world. Ciao for now.

Phew! That's ok then. Yes, he is quite a character and yes, it was Mel he had led astray that afternoon - not that it takes much 8-)

Gosh that sounds great! There's nothing better than the British Isles when the weather is decent but we noticed before we jumped ship that it was becoming less and less likely. Wet and windy was often how it was in Cumbria (a bit like here yesterday!) regardless of the season. The sun has now returned here (though its still a bit breezy).21 degrees just now.
Best wishes, Lesley
