The BIG Birthday Party Weekend

For those who couldn't make it to Tony's BIG birthday party - what a great night we had! It was brilliant to catch up with loads of folk that we have met since we bought our house here in 2005, as well as meeting some brand new faces. Loved the mix of Italian and English as well (those Italians know how to enjoy themselves and gave us English a run for our money in the noise stakes. Thanks Tony for organising such a great night, to Hotel Continental for their amazing food and hospitality (just how do they put up with us?), Keiron for singing for us and Mel for her excitement about balloons..... I hope you remembered to have a minutes silence as we couldnt make it :lol: !!!

Gutted to be home, already planning next trip out, it was great to meet up with some new faces (Derek and Monica,Paul and Melanie) the saturday night meals are really starting to gather pace.

Raif and Laura are missing Brians Guffaw, see you next year and take care.

Unfortunately we also missed Tonys birthday bash, (had used up September flexi time and annual leave rapidly diminishing!)

We are out on Wed 10th October until Monday 15th, so if anyone wishes to meet up (Saturday dinners as mentioned) would be happy to do so. First though will have to be let into the secret where Saturday night dinners are.

Whereabouts in Santa Maria is your place? (There's a contingent of English folk there now!)

Hi Lesley & Brian,

We are Via degli Ulivi at Parco Marino, not in the centro storico, more like staggering distance from Erolds Pub near the Via Tireno.(He also does home made wine)

We are happy to meet up with someone though at any venue as we have visited a few in Scalea and surrounding area. as long as the food is good and the wine plentiful we are happy! so if anyone is around and fancies joining us, send me a reply

We have some lovely friends who live full-time in Santa Maria, some in Centro Storico and others in Via Della Rosa.
Is Erold's pub on Via Verbicaro? Looks like quite a stagger if so

Hi there May & Allan, yes it would be nice to meet up and put some faces to names. Would you like to name a venue and time, I will have my mobile with me but it is my UK one, I haven't got round to getting an Italian one yet. So it probably bounces back to the UK first!! or if you have a phone we could ring you. Otherwise if you want to arrange where and when to meet would be delighted to do so.

Lesley/Brian, Erolds pub is on the Via Terranica, fairly near the SS18 just a couple of steps from the Supermarket on Via degli Ulivi, believe me if I say it's only staggering distance it is!! As you know staggering is one foward and two back, so it couldn't be that far away!

I would be interested in meeting any of your friends who live there full time as it is what we are planning to do in about 3 years, and will be looking for another property but it would be useful to speak to somone who can advise on various aspects.

Maybe catch up with you at some point, anyone who is around on this short trip is very welcome to join us.

Spied it just this afternoon on my way for a haircut with the lovely Fiona (who has lived in Santa Maria for over 20 years but still has her distinctive Bristol accent!)

She does but doesn't have a shop, I usually go along to my friend Jo and Fiona comes along and does our hair.
Then we have a drink and a chinwag.
Also now have an English friend who makes blinds and curtains should you need any now or in the future,


What sort of food does Erold's bar do?

Not as good as La Rondinella or some of the other places, but he does a blackboard special of a pasta and a meat or fish course, then the menu has the usual pastas, some fish and meat dishes, pizzas and there is a rosticerie. All very reasonable prices, it is cheap and cheerful, he also serves home made wine (his uncle makes it) and you can buy that to take home. Lots of the locals from the village seem to use it.

We'll probably pop down tomorrow night as we normally don't stray too far on our first night and I don't usually get to the supermarket till the next day!!!

Yes that sounds good Lesley, we are just chucking the last things in the suitcases now for our 02.30 wake up for the morning! You have this unfortunate choice at Stansted, if you arrive after 04.00 you do not get a chance of a caffeine hit before you board, if you arrive before that, you get through departures but no one is open! Aagh!

We are going to have a look at Lamezia tomorrow when we arrive, but we shall be going to Erolds tomorrow evening as we will not be straying far afield.

Would love to meet up with you. I watch the camcorder on Diamante all the time I am in the office just to really hack myself off!
