Driving to Scalea - Advice?

Hello All,
We are driving from Salerno to Scalea July 27th. We've never driven in Italy before and I'd appreciate any hints or tips that might make our trip easier. Our Google map has us taking the A3 to SS585 to SS18. Is there a better way? Things to avoid? What type of tolls can I expect? We're from the US and have no experience driving in Europe (this should be interesting huh?) :roll:

Take the A3 from Salerno to Reggio Calabria, come off at Laganegro nord, then follow the road all the way to Scalea, along the SS18.

Cannot remember the toll price, not too much anyway.

Hi all,
We have just done the journey in reverse and there is no toll between Salerno and Scalea (suspect that will come once (if) they finish upgrading the motorway.
We had a diversion along the way but the route is well signposted and it doesn't add too much to the journey time.

Lesley & Brian (now in England, tonight will be in Scotland and we must have brought the sunshine as its lovely just here now-hope it stays that way!)
