Scalea Shuttle Bus - use it or lose it! The Scalea shuttle bus exists. I know, I have used it. First the bus. It’s a bright orange Preite bus (though much smaller than the Autolinea No 7 Preite bus which runs along SS18 between Cosenza and Praia a Mare) and has the words ‘Scalea Servizio Urbano’ in orange letters on the front.
The timetable can be got from the Tourist Office on Via Kennedy and it costs a flat 1 Euro fare to ride it.
As far as I can see there is just one bus which goes on three distinct routes depending on the time of day. The first: is clearly a school run starting at 6.30 which meanders all over Scalea going from the Museo del Bambino down Via Piave to Via Campo Volo where it turns right along Via Lauro and then right again up Viale Primo Maggio to the Railway Station. It should leave the Station at 6:44am but last Friday it left at 7am (hey, this is Italy!). It then follows Viale Ruffillo and Via T. Campanella to P.zza Caroprese and P.zza Aldo Moro before going out the Corso Mediterraneo towards Petrosa along the Via Covello, Viale Raffaello, Via le Caravaggio and then out along the Strada Consorrziale for about 2km. At this point it seems to go back along the Strada Consorrziale , turns again into the Via Covello, Via le Caravaggio and
Viale Raffaello but instead of going up to the railway Station it turns down into the Corso Mediterraneo going all the way to the Via Po where it turns up left to the Liceo Scientifico, arriving there at 7:38am.
At 7:40am it turns down the Via Fiume Lao and goes all the way to P.zza Aldo Moro where it again turns down into the Corso Mediterraneo and again goes to the Via Po where it turns up left to the Liceo Scientifico, arriving there at 8:02am. The second, and I have this from the bus man, is a circular route which, obviously a continuation of the School run, goes every hour from 8:02am to 12:02pm along Via Piave to Via Campo Volo where it turns right along Via Lauro and then right again up Viale Primo Maggio to the Railway Station. It then follows Viale Ruffillo and Via T. Campanella to P.zza Caroprese and P.zza Aldo Moro before going down the Corso Mediterraneo towards Via Po, Via Campo Volo, Via Impresa, Via del Mare, the SS18 back towards Scalea, up the Via Po, turning left into the Via Fiume Lao and again into the Via Piave where it makes the whole circuit all over again. The third is an afternoon school run which goes from the Liceo Scientifica at 12:50pm along the Via Fiume Lao into Scalea where at some point it goes onto the Corso Mediterraneo, the A.S.L. (which I think refers to the Bus Station in P.zza Aldo Moro), out again along the Corso Mediterraneo towards Petrosa along the Via Covello, Viale Raffaello, Via le Caravaggio and then swings behind Scalea and again travels south along the Strada Consorrziale for about 2km back to the Liceo Scientifica. At 1:45pm it again leaves the Liceo Scientifica and repeats this route back to Scalea. This is the last bus of the day. There are no buses after 2pm. I caught this bus at 2pm exactly at the A.S.L. in P.zza Aldo Moro. I wasn’t going anywhere but I had a fantastic trip out to Petrosa and out behind Scalea though part of the Parco Pollino. The view of the mountains was amazing and the view of Scalea from the mountains breathtaking. The trip went south of Scalea, past the Liceo Scientifico and swung around back up through the Via Fiume Lao to the A.S.L. in P.zza Aldo Moro, which was were I got on. For just one Euro this is a trip everybody should take, just for the ride.
The small print at the bottom of the bus timetable says that this is a trail service which will be reduced or suspended if there are not enough passengers  . On the day I rode the bus I was the only passenger for the whole journey. SO IF YOU LIVE IN PETROSA OR CAMPO VOLO OR ANYWHERE ALONG THIS ROUTE, TRY TO USE THIS BUS. AND EVEN IF YOU DON’T LIVE ON THE ROUTE, TAKE THE RIDE JUST FOR FUN AND TO HELP KEEP THE SERVICE GOING.
