Hi Claire
I took out extra insurance for contents and some for buildings (I think), I'll post up the details when I find them.

Hi,

We have just taken out buildings and contents insurance for a total premium of £200 a year, this covers us for E100,000 rebuild value for buildings and a E20,000 for contents, more than enough for what is in the house.
We used Schofields from Bolton and it was very pain free.
This also includes letting insurance as well that even includes accidental damage and loss of revenue from cancelled bookings etc if oyu are going to rent out your place.

Paul,Laura and Raif Campbell.

Talking Building & Contents Insurance

In case anybody would like to have some good companies to quote on this I would recommed http://www.intasure.com and Schofields. These are UK companies but I am sure anybody from anywhere is free to get a quote. Mine is for Santa Domenica Talao.

In fact I have just gone with intasure as they include earthquake insurance as well as rental cover, accidental damage etc. And because I got my sister a quote for her holiday home they cut the cost by about 16 Euros; simply for asking!

So, do remember to ask or say you were recommended. I don't receive a cut but it may benefit you. Schofields are good but don't include earthquake insurance cover without an additional premium, thereby making them less competitive.

Regards

Helena

We have insured with Copelands.
Their policy is underwritten by the same company as Italsure but they have a lower earthquake excess as well as being cheaper.
(NB there's a company called Italsure as well as one called Intasure!).

I had quotes for half a dozen companies and Copeland were the best price for the cover we wanted but I would imagine that everyone will have different needs and requirements for their individual circumstances.

I know a lot of people have used Scofields www.schofields.ltd.uk and have had a very good service with them.

It is better to use an English company than an Italian one as then at least you can read the small print, and I bet the customer service is better.

Thanks Helena for raising a topic I dropped the ball on. It could take some research. My agent here was unaware of American companies that offer foreign coverage, but I was also the first to ask the question. A quick look at the Instasure quote site had no drop downs for an address in the USA, so it's unclear whether Yanks can buy there. I'll look into all the ones mentioned on this thread and find more info. Schofields seems to specialize in holiday homes, but Copeland (per Lesley) offers coverage for fulltime homes as I read the posts. Janet and Stuart will have a perspective from their experience also. Always another detail to think about!!! Thank goodness for the internet.....we wouldn't have ventured this far without it. If I'm correct in reading this thread and the one about hired cars, "excess" is similar to our "deductible"; i.e., the more out-of-pocket expenses you'll absorb in a claim, the lower the policy premiums. Grazie a tutti,

While the market value of apartments in the Scalea area is low relative to this part of the world, does anybody know if the rebuilding costs are similar to the market value?
I am investigating insurance at the moment and would like information on the following -

1. Do the condominium fees we pay usually include insurance cover for buildings, or does it simply differ from complex to complex ?

2. If insurance cover is included, is there any point in taking out a private insurance policy? Surely insurance companies will not pay out twice on the same policy.

Due to paycuts and income levies here in ROI, I am trying to implement some cost-cutting measures of my own! While I have no wish to insure on the double, I don't want to take any risks either - so any information would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,
Markel
