Noticed workmen all around the town today, busily erecting one way signs. So a note to all who drive here, it seems the centre of Scalea is to be virtually a one way system by summer. I welcome it, but I will be curious to see when all the Italian drivers take heed

Sounds like fun. They changed the one way system at the top of the pedestrian area once and it was chaos. Even with the police standing there directing traffic they still went the old way!! A couple of days later they changed it back again.
Thanks for the warning though.
I hope that Via Faro becomes one way as some of the corners can be tricky at times with two-way traffic. It is one-way in August but at the end of the Italian holidays the sign is removed and the road becomes two-way again. I usually take the longer way up the hill where the road is much wider to try to keep the hire car safe from dents.
Billy.
The one way system was today implemented with police or wardens on every corner or intersection of Via Lauro and Via Lao from their beginnings at the bottom of Centro Storico to the Spa. Why don’t the council advertise these great days of entertainment they organise for us?
Well we managed to get caught up in the fun and games today - Brian didnt see the no entry sign and got a telling off from the cop with his red lollipop.
Crazy!
Hi,
If I remember correctly, Via Lauro was part one-way before becoming 2-way near the back of the Interspar supermarket. Via Fiume Lao was 2-way ---Has this now become 1-way going in the opposite direction to Via Lauro? Also Via Tommaso Campanella was 2-way becoming 1-way nearer the pedestrian area. Has this also been changed? I wont be in Scalea until May and don't want to do a 'Brian' when I get there.Any help regarding the new set up will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers, Billy.
The front of the spar is one way out of Scalea and the back of the spar one way into Scalea. The problem appears to be where it then meets the pedestrian precint. It is joined by the traffic coming down from Via TC and both have to go down the side street. This was the only bottleneck we could see. Lots of men in uniform with red lollies guiding you! Nothing on Via Faro. Think of the residents having to go all the way round. New more permanent beach bars being built. Very interesting!

Just back in Ireland after a quick visit. By now the one-way system seems to work very smoothly - I met the occasional "rogue" going the wrong way - but the uniforms seem to have put away their lollipops!
I think the change in V Fiume Lao is particularly useful - given the width of the street and the local tradition of abandoning cars with their rear-ends sticking out of the parking place at an angle!

Plus ca change!
Yes, the main system makes V Lauro one-way going north and V. Fiume one-way going south. If I remember rightly, they both become two-way just beyond Despar. There may be other incidental changes in side-streets (collateral damage?!) but these are the main changes.
The only problem I found was a bit of a bottle-kneck at the pedestrianised end of Lauro - where two streams converge into a very narrow street going towards Fiume.
I suspect this latter junction will not be a pretty sight in Agosto!!!
Hope to see various friends over there in a couple of weeks.
