Default What is the best way to travel from Roma to Scalea???

Ciao,
I'm looking for information on the best way to travel from Roma to Scalea.

I've looked into the train option. Most trains you must transfer to another train.

I'm looking for a simple solution. That would be fast and easey. We must travel with a few suitcases.

Our flight arrives at 9:20am in September.
Maybe a rental car would be a good choice.

If anyone would provide advice that would be great!

Thankyou!!!!!

Hi erniegandolfi,
There are a few trains that you don't have any changes on but the times may not suit you. With luggage it's certainly a preference not to have to change. For your own comfort hiring a car would probably be your best bet. We have driven from Naples and it was fine. I've never driven from Rome but plenty of people have and don't seem to have any problems. There has been a fair bit of discussion on the forum on all of this so it might be worth doing a search. Best of luck
Niamh

Hi erniegandolfi

I have driven from Rome to Naples several times the route is straight forward. I would recommend that you take the inland motorway, left at Casserta (The exit is marked for A30 Salerno, A3 Reggio C, A16 Avellino and A14 Bari) and not the Coastal route. It is a lot less crowded and you avoid the `Galleria del Morte` between Naples and Salerno. The train has never been an option for us because the flight from Bristol arrives too late for us to catch the last train.

But remember to be cautious when you select your car hire firm and read previous posts on this subject.

Ciao

John

Hi there,

My wife and I have often taken the train from Termini. If you book online, you arrive at Termini with your ticket already printed, you seat booked, go straight to your carrraige, and sit and relax for 4 hrs 30 to 5 hrs - depending on the train. You may have to evict a sitting tenant from your pre-booked seat, but that's seldom an insurmopuntable problem.

Most days there's a direct train at 11.45 and another at 14.27, and the 2nd class fare on both is Euro 34. (We haven't tried the First-class - must do sometime)

Luggage can be a nuisance - very large and heavy cases are not easy to squeeze up into the o/head racks, despite the assistance one usually gets from fellow passengers. It is wise to provide yourself with a couple of paninni and at least water to drink - as you can't always count on the little trolly making an appearance when you want it. There is an excellent and efficient purveyor of this type of snack in Termini itself not far from the ubiquitous Macs.

On arrival at Scalea there are generally a couple of taxis waiting for fares - though they are not cheap. I have the phone number of one whom I have found to be reliable, if you want I can pass it on to you in a PM or the like. I sometimes ring him from the train (provided there is a sufficiently long tunnel-free zone!) and he is waiting when we arrive. He charges Euro 25 to San Nicola - I don't know where you are going, but you can probably calculate accordingly.

All of the above holds good for two adults. If I were travelling with children, I think I'd go for the hired car option.

Buona fortuna.

Dermot

Hi,

We travelled from Rome to Scalea in May. It is a great drive. Wish we had roads like that at home. We are back over in August and because there probably will be more traffic we have decided to fly from Rome Fiumicino to Lamezia with Easyjet and drive up to Scalea. Then going home, drive up to Rome leaving the car at Fiumicino airport. Flights are only €50 for the two of us.

Michael.
