Thumbs up Car Hire

Tony from Scalea Properties has arranged car hire for us on several occasions. Have always found it very good and reliable.

There used to be a Budget Car Hire on Via Lauro in Scalea who we rented from a couple of times but I've a feeling they are gone. Someone may be able to confirm. They don't seem to come up as a location on the Budget website anymore. Sorry can't be of more help !

That's correct. Although the garage on Via Lauro still has the budget sign up it ceased to be a franchise for budget rent a car last year.

Sorry. I meant to add that I asked a similar question of Lesley and Brian earlier this week. unfortunately in my deep despair at having to leave Scalea after 3 lovely weeks my recollection has become clouded, but I believe that Lesley mentioned a company out on Corso Mediterraneo which I believe to be 'Movers'. They can be found at MOVERS RENT ITALIA srl - AUTONOLEGGIO - Automobili - commercio - and are at no. 475 c. Mediterraneo. Hope this helps.

PS: if you do use them can you let me know how you get on as I am looking to hire a car in September.

Regards

Andy

Andy,

Another spot is Giulliano De Presbiteris. He sells used cars, has a good mechanic shop and rents cars. He towed my clutch-dead Alfa, repaired it etc. He's not an internet guy, so no website.

Phone is 338.8371594

He speaks no English and is not very patient with stranierie attempts to speak. BUT if you have some skills and are a little assertive, he has the cars. His lot is located on the road off SS18 to Hotel Sea Breeze. doug

Yes, this guy quoted us €20 a day based on a week's hire. Think he would maybe do a deal for longer. He will pick you up at the station if required. You have to phone him though to organise.

Andy,
Tony usually organises carhire via Guiliano (generally he gets involved as Guiliano doesn't speak English but you can have a go yourself) and the cars can usually be delivered to wherever they are needed.
He doesn't have a website or online booking service though.
Last time I went to his place with Seamas, to drop off the car that Seamas had hired, Guiliano had a beach buggy that looked really cool 8-))
It had no roof or sides though so it might not be the best vehicle to rent if the heavens open they way they sometimes can!

Thanks for the info everyone. Think I might take a chance on the buggy Lesley because as you know we usually attract good weather!!! Will definitely book through Tony though as although I am confident of explaining my requirements I will be totally lossed when he talks back to me at normal speed for an Italian.

Default Car hire

Yes, that was back in March - maybe it's because it is peak period you were quoted more. Also we were not fussy what type of car he gave us as we only wanted it for local trips. Some of his cars were more expensive. Have not used him yet so can't comment any more. Sorry

I wonder whether time of year makes a big difference (supply and demand and all that)???
I have heard a lot of folk say that they are paying considerably more this year for car hire than they did previously.
Maybe the car hire firms are trying to recoup the outlay they had to make last year and the start of this year (the ash cloud must have made an impact in lots of ways) so they need to charge more now?
If anyone if hiring cars in other parts of the world could they comment, please, on if it seems to be more expensive generally....

This is just my conjecture on the subject ..............the only time we have hired a car this year was when we had to attend a memorial service in the UK so the last thing on our mind was the cost of car hire, to be honest!

Always an interesting subject and worthy of a bit of debate,
best wishes, Lesley

Hi

We decided this time around to travel by train from Naples to San Nicola Arcella.

So needed a car for a few days we used Autoservizi, C. so Mediteranneo 475 in Scalea not far from Hotel Principi on the main road near Renault / Movers sign.

Cost us 105 euros for 3 days, friendly service and no problems.

Vehicle was a little used but was good enough for a runaround on our stay.

Doug - tried the place you suggested near San Nicola but he doesn`t hire cars out but he gave me a telephone number for another place in Scalea previously mentioned in other posts.
