Law & Order in Scalea

Hi Folks,

Just a little warning that the parking meter folks in Scalea (there are at least 4 of them) are quite serious about their job to raise revenues. I've watched them and have paid for parking vouchers in the curbside ticket machines. However, I must have been thinking that they were not watching in off-seasons since we just got a ticket from 24 FEB that because we didn't pay the original €38 fee, we now owe €48. There is absolutely no way to argue we didn't do it back in February, and there's no way to fight the fact that I never saw a parking ticket on the car windscreen.

Just a word of caution. If you park in Scalea in a spot lined with blue, you must pay for a parking voucher and place it on the dashboard of the auto.

This has been depressing for me as I have not had any traffic violations since 1972. doug

Don't worry about your ticket. Take a win on being violation free for so long. That is quite an accomplishment.
I have another question, Tony from Calabria Property Consultants mentioned that there is a Doug and Di from Oregon from whom I may be able to rent an apt for a week in October when my hubby and I are coming over. Is that you?

Hi Chris,

Yes that would be us, but Tony's a little ahead of things with the space. We hope to start the remodel of our lower apartment soon, but cannot guarantee it would be complete by October at this point and we will use it for family and guests, not general renting. There are a number of folks in Santa Domenica T that rent their places and many more in the Scalea/San Nicola areas and they may pick up on this discussion to aid you. We'd be happy to meet if you come this fall and discuss things with you guys from our point of view. Are you thinking of moving over, or a holiday house?

Does anyone know the regulations for 'Blue Badge' holders? I have nervously paid for parking 'just in case' because we are not sure.

As far as we are aware Blue badge has no validity in Italy. Think if you look on the AA site (or similar) you will find that you have to pay. My mum kept wanting to use her Blue Badge out here but, like you, we took no risk.

We have used the blue badge in Italy but as in the UK sometimes you pay sometimes you don't so you need to read the conditions at the site. There are places reserved for blue badges and they seem to be quite tight on it - they use the sign you see sometimes here -

"Vuoi il mio posto, prendi il mio handicap".

Try googling "parcheggio per i disabili in Italia" for some interesting videos.

Thanks, we will check these suggestions. I seem to recall our Orange badge went Blue as it WAS a European agreement - just haven't found the rulebook yet!

Dear Huale,

Tony is incorrect about an apartment to rent from us. Our guest apartment is not complete and we'll not be renting it regardless. Sorry. I think Tony's going on some comments we made when we bought the second place 2 years ago! Between hotels and B&Bs there are lots of opportunities around here. There are 3 B&Bs in Santa Domenica Talao alone. We could provide contact info on those if needed....we need to add them to the general info categories eventually. Take care.
