Default Volcanic ash

Hi all

Due to fly next Tuesday and a fresh cloud of ash appears. Oh Well! I will have to go back to my celtic roots and sacrifice something on the top of the Skirrid (Our old sacred mountain). Just wondering about what to sacrific a lamb, our local MP or one of the genetically challenged habitual criminals of the area. It must be the MP. When we expose their innards, lets hope the omen are good for a strong westerly wind. The local druid priest should be able to interpret the signs.

There are all the other bookings as well hotels , hire car and airport parking. What a mess. I`ll use my bike next time (motor not mountain).

Ciao

John

Default Volcanic ash - flight disruptions info.

Hi John,

Yes, it's a pain, isn't it? Although we've nothing planned ourselves so far this year, I though it might be convenient for some of our members to have a couple of links posted here to the info. provided by two of the main British budget airlines flying to Italy, namely, Ryanair and Easyjet, as a quick shortcut:

Severe Flight Disruptions due to Volcanic Ash

Flight Cancellations due to Volcano Eruption

It looks a little more hopeful now than it did yesterday, with more flights being reinstated and more people being able to make their way home, so you may be OK for Tuesday. We only saw a couple of aeroplanes in the sky while we were out and about yesterday - quite the strangest thing to see a sky devoid of planes and smoke trails - can't remember seeing anything like that in my whole life. Nice and peaceful, though!

We live in the East of England and, while at the coast recently, we were aware of seeing a very thin film of light-coloured dust on all the cars parked in a supermarket car park - don't think there can be any other explanation for something like that as it's too much of a coincidence.

Ah well, here's hoping everything will be back to normal soon and everyone will get to where they need to go without too much hassle.

Incidentally, there's also some info. on refunds on the links I've provided - haven't had time to look into it but will be interested to know whether anyone actually gets a refund from an airline for this particular problem.

Ciao a tutti,

Frances.

Default Volcanic ash disruption - compensation?

Hi all,

I thought I'd post a couple of links to the Daily Mail website re: recent information about compensation for the flight disruption caused by the volcanic ash. It doesn't look good for Ryanair customers, I'm afraid, but it seems you have more of a chance of getting a refund with Easyjet or BMI:

Iceland volcano: Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary refuses ash victims' compensation | Mail Online

Iceland volcano ash delays: Can I claim compensation? | Mail Online

Will be interested to hear if anyone is successful with a claim.

ATB.

Ciao,

Frances.

Default Ryanair - compensation

Hi,

OK, so this is the latest news for Ryanair re: compensation for flight disruption caused by volcanic ash:

The Associated Press: Ryanair U-turn, will pay stranded customers' bills

Interesting.

Hope this helps.

Ciao,

Frances.

Try driving there....

We have just driven back (own car anyway), but met a family who had to get a one-way with Hertz for 3000e (ouch) from Sorento.

Seen on another forum where someone was quoted 2500e, but asked if they have not got a UK-IT one way that they could take back to the UK. They were offered 240e.

You may get a UK->IT to take one of theirs back on the cheap (Norfolkline for the ferry!). Then maybe fly home later...

Smile Phew, home at last!

We were due to fly home on Sunday from Naples, so consequently became volcanic ash victims.

We were offered another flight 8 days later, this coming Monday, but with the uncertainty at the time of another dust cloud sweeping across the UK and the need to get back to work and school we decided to hire a car and make the long drive.

Thankfully my sister booked hotel accommodation for us and the ferry crossing because we didn't have Internet access in the apartment.

We hired a very nice diesel VW Polo from Europcar in Naples for €513 one-way (Budget Car wouldn't let us take the car we already had into France). Monday was a long drive up to the French border but at least the scenery was interesting, especially through Tuscany, and we stayed in a very nice hotel at the foot of the Alps. Day two was a shorter journey, through France to Calais although the scenery was less inspiring. We stayed overnight in Calais and crossed to Dover on Wednesday morning. A very painless crossing - no queues or hold-ups, straight onto the ferry - much easier than getting on a plane.

It wasn't a cheap end to our holiday, and we could have done with some more time to reduce the travelling on each day, but all in all it was a pretty positive experience. It's made us think about driving down to Scalea in our own car on another occasion - p'raps building in some time to stop and visit some of the places we were racing past!

Question Getting home

It might be a day too late but we just want to let any forum members waiting in Scalea for rescheduled flights in the next day or two, e.g. Monday that we flew back from Naples yesterday (our first available flight when ours was cancelled Sat 17th - Easyjet) that our flight was only one third full! I can't remember when we've been on such an empty plane! We'd made the decision to stay put and hold this flight. We also had visitors who had to get away, different airports, different airline so we made this decision. Easyjet was still saying on line 'don't come to the airport without reservations - there might be limited but no guaranteed standby! ' If you are still waiting there is plenty of space and they are not letting you know!

Default Glad to know you are Home at last!

Hi Alison, Iain and girls

Pleased to hear that you got home at last - we did think of you stuck out there? As you know I am not a fan of flying much prefer driving if we had the time. The journey is not too bad if as you say you can break it up with stops at various places on the way. To save the toll money in France we normally come home via Belgium (also quick pop into Luxembourg for cheap petrol, cigs etc) We are driving out in August so hope to see you then.

Love
Heather and Steve

Default Driving to Scalea

Heather and Steve

Good to see you over Easter, I bet you were glad you got home before all the ash trash started...

We've decided to drive down to Scalea in August - so we may see you en route! I think we'll travel through Belgium and Luxembourg as you suggested, especially if fuel's cheaper there.

See you soon (end of May I think)

Ali and Iain

Post New Volcanic Ash Flight Cancellations

Hi,

I'm sure members are aware by now of fresh flight cancellations due to volcanic ash levels - mainly airports Ireland and Scotland are affected but here is a link to The Times online website with today's news, in case anyone hasn't heard it yet:

Ireland flights grounded by return of the volcanic ash cloud -Times Online

Hopefully, things will start to return to normal service soon but It's better to be safe than sorry, I suppose. We saw thin trails of volcanic ash fallout in the sky from our back garden around 23rd April - only thin and wispy and it was probably missed by the majority of people but definitely not your normal cloud formation -then this appeared to "seed" the clouds and brought unexpected rain to the area (East Anglia).

Anyway, here's wishing everyone travelling to and from the area a safe and pleasant journey and I hope the cancellations don't cause too much disruption to your schedule.

Ciao a tutti,

Frances.
