My husband and I are interested in buying a small property in Scalea or newrby but I have heard some horror stories about having to pay protection money to mafia. Has anyone had any experience with this? Is it a problem? ANy info you can give me would be very welcome.

We have an appartment in Scalea for 3 years now
and we have never heard of such a thing.
If you should buy you will love it.

Have heard of one or two stories in Sicily regarding Mafia, but owned an appartment in Scalea for three years, your more likely to be exploited getting there with Ryanair than by any Mafia

Scalea is a wonderful place with lots of great restaurants. We've had a place out there for several years now and all the locals are very friendly. I think you would have to travel to the very bottom of the country before you experienced any problems and even then they would probably leave you alone.
