Default Stromboli Buffs

Just yesterday Kevin Hall showed be a great sunset photo with Isola Stromboli that he took at Christmas from his Parco Meridiana terrace. Today, walking across the village piazza, a neighbor friend and I spoke of the beautiful morning and he pointed to the island visible out to sea. I said something about Stromboli and he said, no, Stromboli e' piu' sinistra - quell e' Vulcono. No, Stromboli is more to the left and that is Vulcano.

Didn't want to debate with a resident, but did some research and think Bepe was wrong. Stromboli is the closest of that island chain to the Scalea area at about 130 km. Vulcano is the closest to Sicily and 165 km (approx) from here. A compass bearing from SDT to the visible island is 206 deg which looks pretty accurate plotted on our world atlas for Stromboli. Finally, if you look at all those islands from the oblique view on Google Earth, only one has the most classic volcano shape -- Stromboli. Oh. A second island to the west was barely visible this morning and based on the compass and shape, I'm guessing Isola Salina.

Here's a couple pics from today before the haze moved in. You'll see the northern edge of Cirella to the left of the frame. These and Kevin's look like the Google images. Anyone else have more knowledge, or an opinion? Doug

Default Stromboli

Hi Doug

Great Photos. I have seen Stromboli whilst staying in Tropea but never from Scalea. I will look more carefully next time.

I checked on my map and you are right Stromboli is approximately 205 degrees from Scalea.

Where can I find Kevin's photos?

Ciao

John

Beautiful photos Doug.

Were those drops of moisture showing on the camera screen? Hope the rain has stopped.

Should be good produce from the lemon tree this year at this rate of precipitation.

Hi Helena and John,

Maybe Kevin will spot this and reply about his beautiful sunset image. I don't have his contact info.

Good eye Helena. I'm afraid after dragging my camera around to forest fires, floods and blizzards the past couple years it finally got nasty dirt on the digital sensor and the spots are very evident now. I ordered a sensor cleaning kit from England that should arrive any day. I've never done it and know that if you scratch the sensor, you may as well buy a new camera.

Someone did some pruning of your lemon tree - did you ask for that? I'll send you a photo.

Doug

I've attached the shot again here for everyone to find a bit easier.
Whichever Isola is which, it looked beautiful.
