Intrigued to know what incident you experienced on the train?
Having travelled on many Italian trains recently (2nd class all the time) the only one I had any 'incidents' on was the Rome to Sicily (via Napoli) train.
First there was a heavy 'stand off' over a seat next to me, with the other Italians in the carriage all giving me eyebrows up and down type signals - coupled with two Sicilian looking henchmen/musclemen in the doorway (of the little 6 person compartment) backing up one guy (their friend). Amazingly the henchmen moved on with their friend as the other guy won the seat. Turns out though, that the guy who won the seat next to me, we 'think' was a mobile phone thief, or other type of thief. At one point he had about 5 or 6 phones going off in various pockets, or using other phones from other pockets, talking in a mixture of swahili and broken Italian and broken English, all mixed up in sentences. (never a dull moment in this train!). Later on, as the train went into the many long tunnels (never known tunnels quite as long as those ones) the passengers in the little compartment all started to fall asleep one by one. Then my daughter noticed the mobile phone guy getting up and touching people's bags. At one point he went up the window, put his hands on the Italian lady's handbag (which was on the window sill and not at all blocking his view) and pretended he needed to move it so he could see out the window (even though the small bag was at pelvis height and his head near the top of the window! - lol)! My daughter kept pretending to fall asleep but would then spring her eyes open, just at the moments he was up and trying to touch peoples bags. It was quite amusing (though a little worrying) what with me trying to keep an eye on all our bags and not fall asleep - I even found myself lulling into sleep in some of the tunnels and I was trying to fight sleep.
We got out at Napoli and left the 'mobile phone thief' and his sleeping companions to it..... :???:
This was the most 'interesting' of all our Italian train journies - including a male pensioner and his decades younger frisky wife (or bit on the side probably) getting it on in the corridor,

to people trying to sell you things like 'socks' and other odd items. Also there was someone begging with a pieces of paper in Italian (probably 'I am homeless, my baby is starving' etc).
I would do the journey again, but I would try to avoid that type of train. Or go first class, or both. I was told after Id booked it, that it was one of the older style trains (every single carriage had only mini compartments within it, each for 6 people). You can tell when you book the train if you are offered a choice of 3 seats in a row it is for the compartment type train. I think it was quite a cheap trrain too - so guess most people book that train. I was unable to book the train beforehand (full up) so had to book that one, as I had a ferry to connect with. The booking confused me at the time as all our other train journeys had been a choice of two seats in a row. Now I know.
