This summer (Jun-Aug), a Vodafone promotion means it will only charge members of its free passport scheme standard UK call costs or use inclusive mins, when holidaying in most European & Australasian countries. Existing Vodafone Customers: Contract customers can join the free scheme by texting 'Passport' to 97888, or 2345 on Pay-As-You-Go. Non-Vodafone Customers: Get a FREE Vodafone PAYG sim (£10 gets you 100 mins & 300 texts), put it in your phone to join the free passport scheme, then switch it for your normal sim while away; you'll need an unlocked handset.

The set up as explained for Vodaphone is in fact already operated by 3UK where calls to UK are 'free' from your allocation. However that is coming to an end this month on 3UK but I believe it is being replaced by another scheme.

Personally I have invested in a 3 Skype phone on 3UK for my wife and I use 3UK as well on my Nokia 95 with Skype on as well. All Skype to Skype are really free across the globe and if you ring any phone number from a Skype phone through Skype, then the charges are really miniscule, e.g. calls to UK/USA/Australia landline phones are 1p a minute.

3Ita in Scalea is very strong and Skpye will work flawlessly. Just be aware though that if you are wandering off elsewhere where 3Ita is not available, Skype cannot be used.
