Default Calabria on TV tonight

Tonight on Channel 4:

Place in the Sun: Home or Away (Friday 24 Apri)l
8:00pm - 9:00pm
Berkshire vs Calabria.

Series in which property experts Jonnie Irwin and Jasmine Harman help people trying to decide whether to buy in the UK or abroad. New parents Neil and Natalie Sweeney choose between buying a house in Berkshire and investing in a holiday home in Italy

Berkshire or Calabria? Hmmmmm, no contest!

Well I watched it but Pizzo, Briatico and Tropea were featured, not Scalea. (Though I have seen the Scalea one on repeat before, many times).

Talking of Place in the Sun type programmes, back in the VERY early days (imagine around 8-10 years ago) of that programme (and other similar programmes) there was one featuring a retired lady who bought a property in either Scalea or Reggio di Calabria. I think she was Scottish and she travelled from Rome to to live in her apartment by train (which I think was in a tower-type block). This was MANY years ago and I was wowed-out with utter admiration for her bravery into the unknown. I only saw it on repeat once, shortly after the first time, and have never seen it again.

Anyone ever seen it or know who the lady is?

Mrs T

Ah, thanks for your reply Claire - so it WAS Scalea after all and it was Tony too - LOL. So long ago since I first saw the clip.

Now I'm left wondering what happened to that lady - is she still living there? Is she on this forum? Who knows....

I tried to google the link online but Real Estate TV wanted a password from me, so I gave up.

Thanks,
Mrs T

Hi Mrs. T,
Check out this link - it worked for me - and you will be able to revisit the experience. I believe the lady featured in the clip who bought the flat in Parco Flora has posted on this forum in the past. Looks great, doesn't it?

Blinkx Video: Living in Southern Italy

Enjoy!
Ciao,
Frances.

Well the plot thickens - I haven't seen that episode before! Plus the date doesn't match up! I definitely saw the programme I'm talking in the very early days of these types of programmes - it would have been around 7 -10 years ago. I'm sure the programme visited Reggio di Calabria and the lady in question was scottish and did travel from Rome on the train (which seems too much of a coincidence though, doesn't it). I thought the lady had a massive lounge and remember it being quite dark in there. Of course I may be mixing up my grey cells!

Ah well, the link you provided (thanks for that) was great to view! Some fantastic views there.

Thanks very much
Mrs T

Hello Mrs Teapot

I am not the Scottish lady featured in your original query but I am the Scottish lady in the 2nd one which I think was not long after I bought my apartment in 2006.

I still love it and still sometimes travel from Rome (especially now that Ryananir have flights to Rome from Edinburgh which is much nearer that Preswtwick). I will be back in June and will be at Bar Pier on 9th.

Best Wishes
Linda

Hi again,

Linda,
Thank you for posting on the forum again to confirm your identity! It was great viewing this clip again and the area - I won't be there myself this year, as far as I know, but it's alway great to reminisce! We did take a trip up there in May last year, had a look around Scalea and took a peek at the Parco Flora complex and it looked as though it had had a facelift. We stayed in one of my hubby's relative's apartments further south, as usual, but we love to do the coastal tour when we're there! The view from Parco Flora over the mountains is particularly nice, though. I'm glad you're still enjoying your trips over there!

Mrs. Teapot,
That's interesting - I haven't seen any older clips than the one Linda took part in but I'd love to see the Reggio one if you ever manage to find it. We didn't discover Scalea until four years ago, so it still seems a relatively newly discovered area to me.
I think that website link is a good one to bookmark because there were some other really good clips of the Calabria area and properties there, etc., along with other places in Italy. It's nice to view, even if you can't be there!

Ciao a tutti,
Frances.

Hi Linda,

Thanks for showing your hand. Maybe it was you after all. Though for the life of me I could swear on it that it was around 7-10 years ago! (I can remember which house I was in when I viewed it). However, I cannot believe there are TWO brave Scottish ladies doing the same thing being shown in their apartments, so can only imagine I have merged two memories together and come up with a mixed random memory! LOL.

What year did you purchase in P. Flora? What year was the programme?

Am still FULL of admiration for what you have achieved though!

Oooh, June 9th in Bar Pier you say? Hmmmm..... well you have got me thinking, as my daughter and I are on whistle stop trip around Italy and am meant to be on day three on Ischia Island on the 9th then one night in Naples before we fly home, BUT I have been considering travelling to Scalea around then anyway and only staying two nights on Ischia Island, so if I do travel to Scalea on the 9th for one night only, I wonder if you and whoever else is getting together could all bare my company?

Mrs T x ps: Beautiful views from your balcony!

I do not have access to UK tv but was fascinated by this discussion - off now to see if the link to Linda will work here. It maynot as in the Middle East many sites are blocked due to censorship.

Sorry not around 9th as not flying in until end of June.

I bought my apartment in January 2006 and I think it was in summer 2006 when a few of us met for a meal (Sky TV Crew were there too) that they (and Tony) persuaded me to be interviewed for the programme.
The next day they were 3 hours late in arriving and it was all over very quickly but hey that was my 3 minutes of fame lol x.
I am not brave I am just a middle aged crazy Scotish woman who took a mad but wonderful turn and bought a wee place in a lovely area to chill out.

Linda, well it can't have been you as the lady I remember was retired and living there full time. I'm sure it was Reggio.

Still, I wouldn't call it crazy, I'd call it INSPIRED and FORWARD THINKING.
