Default Scalea to Verbicaro

Hello everyone,
I just registered as a member. My friend and I will be traveling to Italy and going down to Scalea. We would like to visit the town of Verbicaro and was wondering if anyone knows #1) where we get a bus in Scalea that goes to Verbicaro, and 2) how/where we can find a bus schedule.

Many thanks for your help!
JoAnn

Does the train go to Verbicaro or is the station quite a way from the town?

Hi JoAnn:

We drove to Verbicaro and had a wonderful time exploring this lovely town. When we arrived we went to the commune - we call it City Hall and asked for directions to the Santa Maria Chiesa. Before we knew it, 3 women came to us and took us to the small church. One spoke English and told us all about the town - she also introduced us to the sindaco (mayor). The church has incredible Byzantine frescoes. Our guides continued our tour and showed us the main church which is beautiful - at the time the organ was being restored. They also took us to a small building that housed their Nativity display - one of our guides had made all of the costumes for the nativity figures. From there they took us to the cantina to try the Verbicaro wines. Amazingly, these women spent 2 and half hours with us - they are so proud of their town.

Enjoy your trip!

Ths station is a VERY long way from Verbicaro if you are looking at the station of Marcellina-Verbicaro-Orsomarso.
(Diamante station is also called Diamante-Buonvicino when Buonvicino is at least 8 or 9 kilometers away.)

I've just had a look at ViaMichelin and it looks like Verbicaro is 13 kilometers from the station.

ViaMichelin: Maps, routes, route planner, UK maps, European maps, Michelin maps, route calculation

Default Thank you everyone!

Thank you for the information. I have since found a bus schedule on this site. Thank you to whomever posted the link to the bus company.

What a wonderful story, Janet, about the women greeting you at the commune!
All four of my grandparents were born/raised in Verbicaro as was my mother for the first seven years of her life. I am so looking forward to going to Italy for the first time.

Thank you, everyone!

Wow, you can get a train from Scalea to Diamante (are you saying it actually goes into or very near Diamante?).

Where else, locally, can you get a train to?

Look at the photos section and then Verbicaro - I posted some photos there when we first went there several years ago- the frescoes, the old part of town and views from the old part. That day I was there it was the saint's day of the little church and the old ladies were waiting for the priest to come and give a blessing. Bus times change but when I checked them out then (I thought I was going to be in Scalea the next week with a friend coming out and without a car and it would have been a good place to visit) it seemed that the buses were all geared to taking people to Scalea and back (for the Liceo or work?) so although you could get out there, there wasn't a bus later to get you back. Then the next time I was there there was a bus waiting in the square and I checked it out with the driver and he said there was no way of doing it from Scalea. Seems a shame. We find the same thing is common in Cornwall - although it's not as bad as they're more into tourism here so they put on buses for tourists. Maybe when Calabria goes more down that road they'll get some times organised to suit tourism - I guess there's just not that demand for it yet. It would be really good as there are loads of small towns it would be good to visit by bus - not least because the trip in a car to lots of them is pretty hair-raising and it would be nice to enjoy the view rather than just thinking you were going to fall a couple thousand feet at any moment!

Whoops. Have just checked out the PREITE times and there is now a later bus from Verbicaro back to Scalea. It's 15.30. Brilliant! The buses from Scalea go at 8.00, 11.15, and 13.20 although obviously if you got the 13.20 one you'd only have about 1 hr 20 mins there. With the 8.00 one you'd have over 6 hours there. Now off to look up times for all the other villages.

Default Verbicaro

Hi JoAnn

Yes Margret is right , you can check the bus services out on
Autoservizi Preite
There you will find a couple of options.

Also thanks to Janet, it was a nice reminder of how simpatico the locals are and of how proud there are of their villages and history.

Ciao

John

You can get to Diamante by train and bus (and the station is right in town) and you can also get to Belvedere by bus and train. The station is down in the part near the beach but the bus goes up to the Centro Storico which is definitely worth a visit.
Having said that there are roadworks on the road up to there just now following a landslide at the beginning of the month.
In the other direction there is Praia a Mare you can easily get to by bus.

Regards, Lesley
